Lajes Base Under Investigation
The Ministério Público has opened an inquiry into whether the United States' use of the Lajes air base on Terceira during the war on Iran has complied with the law, the Prosecutor-General's Office told Lusa. It follows a complaint the Bloco de Esquerda filed in April. Opening an inquiry is the standard response to such a complaint, not a finding of wrongdoing, and no suspects have been named. The Foreign Minister, Paulo Rangel, denies any breach of the bilateral agreement or of international law.
Odair Moniz Officers May Yet Be Tried
Lisbon's Court of Appeal has ruled invalid the decision not to try two PSP officers accused of false testimony about a knife reported beside Odair Moniz, shot dead by police in Cova da Moura in 2024. The appeal judges found the February decision failed to set out the facts behind it and sent the case back to an investigating judge. The ruling was not unanimous. In June the trial court found Moniz had no knife.
Seventeen Leaders Defend Farm and Regional Funds
Portugal and 16 other "friends of cohesion" have told the Irish Council presidency that cohesion and Common Agricultural Policy funding must not be cut further in the 2028 to 2034 EU budget. They want new priorities paid for with new own resources, limited joint debt and a slower repayment of NextGenerationEU, and an end to rebates for the biggest contributors. Six net payers have asked for cuts of hundreds of billions. Leaders meet on 15 and 16 October.
A Leaner Plan for the Azores
The Azores' draft plan for 2027, the first since 2022 without Recovery and Resilience Plan money, foresees 1,057 million euros of investment, 134 million less than this year. Health funding rises by 270 million to 760 million, mostly through debt conversion and a transfer from Lisbon, and the tender for a new Ponta Delgada hospital is due in 2027. The draft budget forecasts a 112 million euro deficit and slower growth as tourism weakens.
Fuel Sales Dip as Diesel Stays Dear
Road fuel sales in August were 2.7 percent lower than a year earlier and diesel sales 4.7 percent lower, DGEG figures show, as diesel averaged 2.029 euros a litre, up 30.2 percent on August 2025. Sector estimates point to a cut of about three cents a litre on both diesel and petrol on Monday, even though the government has trimmed its temporary fuel-tax discount for a second week.
Quarterly Declaration Due for the Self-Employed
Workers on recibos verdes must file their quarterly Social Security declaration by 31 October, the Social Security Institute reminds. It covers income received from July to September and sets contributions for October to December. The form can only be submitted online, through Segurança Social Direta, under Trabalho, then Remunerações e contribuições, then Trabalhadores Independentes.
