The Portugal Brief is an independent English-language news publication covering Portugal, published by Thrifty Explorations LLC. This page explains how we make our content and the standards we hold it to.

Who We Are

We are a small, family-run publisher. Our founder and editor lived the move from the United States to Portugal firsthand and leads all editorial work. Family members contribute in advisory roles, including occasional technical advice. We built The Portugal Brief because we needed these resources ourselves and could not find them.

Accuracy

We work to make everything we publish accurate at the time of publication. Our standards differ by stakes: content that informs major decisions, such as visa, tax, healthcare, and housing topics, is held to the highest bar and grounded in official and authoritative sources. Rules and policies in Portugal change frequently, so we also date our content and update it as things change.

Our content is general information, not professional advice. For decisions that matter, confirm the details with a qualified professional or the relevant government authority. Our Terms of Service explain this in full.

Sourcing

Our news reporting draws on authoritative Portuguese sources: official government communications, the Lusa news agency, and established national outlets such as RTP, Observador, and Diário de Notícias. Our guides are built from current official sources, including government portals, published law and regulation, and our own lived experience navigating the systems we write about.

We link to or name sources so readers can verify information themselves.

How We Use AI

We use AI tools throughout our editorial process, including translation, drafting, research, and editing. This is how a small team publishes daily news and in-depth guides at a level of quality and consistency that would otherwise require a much larger staff.

Our editorial standards, source selection, topic choices, and accountability for everything we publish rest with us, not with the tools. We choose what to cover, which sources to trust, and what standards each type of content must meet. We believe in being open about our methods, and we are happy to answer questions about how any piece of our content was made: [email protected].

Independence, Advertising, and Sponsored Content

Our editorial content is independent. Advertisers and sponsors do not influence what we cover or how we cover it.

Sponsored content and advertisements on our properties are always clearly labeled. Sponsored articles reflect the views of the advertiser, not our editorial judgment, and we retain final approval over everything that appears on our sites.

We earn revenue from paid subscriptions, guide purchases, and advertising. None of these relationships change what our reporting says.
