The 1961 liner Funchal, idle in Lisbon since 2015, has been bought for 802,000 euros by a Turkish ship-breaking group and will leave for Aliağa, in Turkey, to be broken up, after an insolvency and several failed rescues, Jornal de Negócios reports.
The National Maritime Authority recorded 30 deaths, 1,418 rescues and 2,609 first aid interventions from 1 May to 30 September. Only 11 of the deaths were at beaches with lifeguards on duty, and eight came in September.
Their association says the force has been starved since 2002, recruited no one from 2009 to 2015 and received four new boats in 17 years. It wants the Polícia Judiciária coordinating operations at sea.
