Applications to remove swallow nests in Portugal rose from 348 to 397 in a year, and licences granted climbed 20%, ICNF figures show. The Algarve's requests nearly tripled. The nests are protected by law since 1999, and Portugal's barn swallow population has fallen 40% in two decades.
