Culture Visas Pass 100 Million Euros

GEPAC, the Ministry of Culture's planning office, has recognised 479 investors who funded heritage or arts projects to qualify for a golden visa, bringing in 104.7 million euros since 2020. Declarations more than quadrupled in 2025. Americans lead, followed by Chinese and Indian investors. Museus e Monumentos de Portugal says it refused 2.25 million euros from Russians after the invasion of Ukraine, and applies checks beyond what the rules require.

Support for Vaccines, Little Knowledge of Them

A survey of 1,500 adults by the patients' movement MOVA found 94.4 percent recognise the benefits of vaccination, but 63.9 percent do not know which adult vaccines the National Vaccination Programme includes. Apart from Covid-19 and flu, very few had any other vaccine in five years. The free autumn flu and Covid campaign is now under way at health centres.

Porto Signs On for the Ocean Race

The municipal assembly approved hosting the round-the-world race in 2031, 2035 and 2039, with its global headquarters in the empty Kasa da Praia on the seafront and a new Ocean Museum. The city's direct contribution starts at 12 million euros, and total commitments pass 22 million. The left-wing parties voted against and the Socialists abstained.

A Rare Whale, Tagged Off Madeira

The Madeira Ocean 2026 expedition has fitted a satellite tag to a Blainville's beaked whale, a deep-diving species that is very hard to spot around the islands. The tag should track it for about six months. The expedition, aboard the Santa Maria Manuela, studies the region's marine protected areas until 28 October.

Court Deadlines and Lawyers in Crisis

Today a hearing can be postponed when a lawyer is in hospital, but the deadlines keep running. The PSD bill would allow deadlines to be suspended for up to 60 days in the last month of pregnancy, a high-risk pregnancy, adoption or serious illness, with limits for urgent cases and defendants in custody. The Bar Association backs it.

Too Old for a Mortgage

A Casa, which plans 46 homes for older members at Santo Isidro de Pegões, told MPs that banks offer people aged 55 to 84 loans of no more than 20 years. It says Banco Português de Fomento has 30-year credit lines ready that only need the Finance Ministry's approval, and wants tax rules changed so members can sell their current homes without losing capital gains relief.
