Web Summit Closes Streets Around Lisbon's MEO Arena From Sunday Morning, With Daily Road Cuts in Parque das Nações Until Thursday
Rua do Bojador shuts from 06:00 on Sunday 8 November until midnight on Thursday, and five more streets close daily for Web Summit. The council's list, garage access, a temporary Carris terminal, ride-hailing points, the scooter ban and the transport pass.
Web Summit returns to Lisbon from Monday 9 to Thursday 12 November, at the MEO Arena and the FIL exhibition centre in Parque das Nações, and the roads around them start closing on Sunday. Câmara Municipal de Lisboa (Lisbon City Council) has published the list of closures, and the Junta de Freguesia do Parque das Nações (the parish council) has passed it on to residents. Both say access to residents' garages will be kept open where it is expressly allowed.
If you live or work between the Alameda dos Oceanos, the Avenida da Boa Esperança, the Avenida do Índico and the Avenida do Atlântico, or you drive past the MEO Arena, FIL or the Gare do Oriente, this is what changes.
Roads closed to cars
- Rua do Bojador, between the Rotunda da Lágrima and the Alameda dos Oceanos: closed around the clock from 06:00 on Sunday 8 November until 24:00 on Thursday 12 November. The Rotunda da Lágrima roundabout stays open.
- Alameda dos Oceanos, in the downhill direction only: closed every day from 07:00 to 24:00.
- Avenida da Boa Esperança: closed every day from 07:00 to 22:00, with local access kept.
- Avenida do Índico: closed every day from 07:00 to 22:00, with traffic sent round by the Rua do Polo Norte.
- Rua do Mar Vermelho, Rua do Mar da China and Avenida do Atlântico: no through traffic from 07:00 to 22:00.
- Rua do Polo Norte: traffic restricted, with garage access kept.
Garage access is kept on the Avenida do Índico, Rua do Polo Norte, Rua do Mar Vermelho, Rua do Mar da China and Avenida do Atlântico, the council says, although drivers may have to follow set routes. The parish council's notice says some of the restrictions begin at 19:00 on Sunday.
Parking
Parking spaces in several streets around the MEO Arena, FIL and Gare do Oriente have been reserved or taken out of use from 19 October to 16 November, the council says, for the event's logistics, loading and unloading, ride-hailing cars and public transport. It is adding more parking for people with reduced mobility on the Avenida do Índico.
Buses, taxis and ride-hailing
- Carris: a temporary bus terminal will run on the Avenida D. João II, in front of the Gare do Oriente, from 8 to 12 November.
- Taxis: the rank beside the Vasco da Gama shopping centre stays open.
- Ride-hailing (TVDE): pick-up and drop-off points are on the Rua do Caribe and on the Alameda dos Oceanos next to the Rotunda dos Vice-Reis.
No shared scooters or bikes near the venue
An exclusion zone for shared scooters and bicycles will cover the area around the main venue, including much of the central part of Parque das Nações between the Alameda dos Oceanos, the Avenida D. João II, the Avenida da Boa Esperança and the riverside. Separately, the council voted in October to remove shared e-scooters from the city within 60 days.
The Web Summit transport pass
Visitors coming for the conference can buy a Web Summit transport pass from Metro de Lisboa, at a price the Metro reserves for participants:
- 3 days: 23 euros, for 72 consecutive hours from the first validation.
- 5 days: 31.50 euros, for 120 consecutive hours.
Both include the cost of the navegante ocasional card and cover unlimited travel on the Metro, Carris buses and trams, and CP's suburban trains on the Sintra, Cascais, Azambuja and Sado lines. They are not valid on tourist routes or on dedicated airport transport services. The pass is sold only in person at Lisbon Airport, next to the Web Summit accreditation area: Saturday 7 November from 09:30 to 22:00, Sunday 8 and Monday 9 November from 07:30 to 21:30, and Tuesday 10 November from 07:30 to 14:30.
For residents who already hold a monthly navegante pass, nothing changes: the nearest Metro station to the venue is Oriente, on the red line.
Why it matters
Lisbon's contract to host Web Summit runs until 2028, and other countries are already courting the organisers. For the Parque das Nações, the same streets also face longer-term change: a rail plan out for comment until 25 November would add three tracks at the Oriente station. Check the council's page before you travel, as times and closures can change during the week.
