Transavia, the low-cost carrier of the Air France-KLM group, has opened sales for its winter 2026/27 schedule with 15 routes connecting Portugal to France, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Fares start at 39 euros per trip, and the airline will operate more than 30 weekly flights from Lisbon and Porto, reinforcing Portugal's position as one of its most strategically important markets.
The Route Map
Portuguese passengers will have direct access to seven European cities across three countries this winter. In France, the destinations are Paris-Orly, Marseille, and Nantes. In the Netherlands, flights will connect to Amsterdam, Eindhoven, and Rotterdam. Brussels rounds out the network as the sole Belgian destination.
Paris-Orly remains the flagship route, with the highest frequency of weekly departures from both Lisbon and Porto. The Funchal-Marseille connection, inaugurated during summer 2025 and extended through the 2025/26 winter season, will return for a third consecutive season, reflecting strong demand on the Madeira-southern France corridor.
The winter schedule runs from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027, with tickets already available for booking on the Transavia website.
Why It Matters for Expats and Residents
For the estimated 100,000 French nationals living in Portugal and the growing Dutch and Belgian communities concentrated in the Algarve, Lisbon, and Porto regions, these routes provide essential connectivity to home countries during the winter months. The availability of affordable direct flights reduces the isolation that can affect foreign residents during the darker, quieter season when tourist-oriented services scale back.
The routes also serve the reverse flow: French, Dutch, and Belgian visitors travelling to Portugal for winter breaks, business, or to visit family and friends who have relocated. This off-season traffic is increasingly important to Portugal's tourism economy, which has been working to reduce its dependence on the summer peak.
Competitive Landscape
Transavia's winter schedule positions it alongside Ryanair, easyJet, and TAP as a major player on Portugal's European routes. The airline differentiates itself through its Air France-KLM group affiliation, which allows for connecting flights at hub airports, and through its focus on secondary airports like Eindhoven and Rotterdam that are underserved by legacy carriers.
The pricing strategy, with base fares from 39 euros, is competitive with Ryanair's promotional fares but typically includes a more generous hand luggage allowance. However, as with all low-cost carriers, extras such as checked luggage, seat selection, and onboard meals add to the final cost.
Madeira's Growing Connectivity
The continued operation of the Funchal-Marseille route is notable for Madeira, which has been steadily expanding its direct European connections beyond the traditional Lisbon and Porto links. The island's year-round mild climate makes it an attractive winter destination, and additional routes from budget carriers help diversify Madeira's visitor base beyond the British and German markets that have historically dominated.
Julien Mallard, Transavia France's executive vice president of sales and marketing, described Portugal as one of the airline's most strategic markets and emphasised the commitment to regional expansion with affordable non-stop connections. The continued investment suggests that Portugal's aviation market remains attractive to carriers despite global uncertainties around fuel costs, which have risen sharply in recent weeks due to the Strait of Hormuz disruptions.
Practical Tips
For residents planning winter travel, booking early typically secures the best fares, particularly for peak travel periods around Christmas, New Year, and Carnival. The Transavia website and app allow flexible date searches to identify the cheapest travel windows. Passengers connecting through Paris-Orly or Amsterdam should check transfer times carefully, as Transavia flights do not always align seamlessly with long-haul Air France-KLM connections.
