The IPMA's outlook for 28 September to 4 October brings moderate and at times heavy rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, stronger wind and temperatures back to normal for the season. Rain and wind warnings are not ruled out.
Coimbra is forecast to reach 37 degrees on Tuesday and Lisbon 35.4 on Monday. Three quarters of the mainland is at one of the top two fire danger levels on a Sunday in late September.
The weekly outlook for 31 August to 6 September has the heat returning in two steps as an anticyclone builds over the Bay of Biscay. Maximums reach 30 to 40 degrees from midweek, with the coastal strip held to 25 to 30.
IPMA held fourteen districts under a yellow warning on Sunday as the season's first serious rain landed on ground burned in July and August. The APA says it has reinforced the teams watching reservoirs, rivers and bathing zones for ash washing off the slopes.
The alert came at 15:11 in Abrantes. By nightfall the fire had four fronts, 180 vehicles and 16 aircraft, with three firefighters lightly hurt and no homes at risk. It burns in a corner of the Medio Tejo that has storm-felled timber still on the ground.
IPMA expects rain along the whole western coast on Sunday and heavier, thundery showers in the North and Centre on Monday, with gusts to 60 km/h and maximum temperatures down to 22 to 26 degrees. Its meteorologist calls the system more autumn than summer.
