Emergency Numbers in Portugal and When to Call Them
Which number to call in Portugal for police, fire, ambulance, poisoning, sea rescue, or victim support, plus a printable list of every number.
Good morning. Here is your Sunday briefing for 25 October 2026: the day's essential Portugal stories for residents, immigrants and anyone keeping an eye on the country, below this week's featured guide. The clocks went back an hour overnight.
- Housing protests: police broke up the Rossio and Porto camps for a second time overnight, detaining 31 people who go before the courts on Monday.
- Climate: a 46-year study finds nights above 20 °C becoming more common, fastest along the border with Spain.
- Scams: fake texts in the name of SNS 24 are demanding an overdue payment; the health service never asks for money by SMS.
- Fire brigades: the Liga dos Bombeiros wants a funding contract in place of a yearly formula it calls uncertain.
- Patient transport: about 100 private ambulances plan a slow drive across the 25 de Abril Bridge on Monday morning over fuel aid.
- Azores: Lusa counted 17 US Air Force refuelling tankers at Lajes, with no new word from Lisbon on what it has authorised.
Police Clear the Housing Camps Again
At about 2am on Sunday the PSP cleared the tents on Lisbon's Rossio and Porto's Praça D. João I, put up again after Saturday's housing marches. It detained 31 people for disobedience, all due before the courts on Monday, and counts 11 injured, three of them officers; Porto's organisers say about 37 were hurt. The 55 people detained on 20 October go before a judge on Tuesday.
Warm Nights Are Becoming More Frequent
A study of 1980 to 2025 data in the journal Atmosphere finds tropical nights rising by about 0.7 a decade across mainland Portugal and by more than two a decade along the Spanish border. The DGS linked this summer's excess deaths to extreme heat and tropical nights.
Fake SNS 24 Payment Texts
SNS 24 has warned of text messages telling people they have five days to settle an urgent overdue payment. It never sends payment requests and its only website is sns24.gov.pt. If you clicked or paid, call your bank at once and report the fraud to the police.
Fire Brigades Ask for a Funding Contract
The 2027 budget proposal keeps volunteer brigades at 37.08 million euros, and the minister has promised a rise of more than 5 percent. The Liga dos Bombeiros says the yearly formula leaves the associations uncertain and wants a programme contract, with career, insurance and classification rules put out for consultation by the end of the year.
Ambulance Convoy on the 25 de Abril Bridge
Private patient transport firms left out of the fuel aid gather in Almada at 07:00 on Monday 26 October and set off at 08:00 across the bridge towards Parliament and São Bento. Their league says it does not want to stop carrying patients, but south bank traffic will be slower.
Seventeen US Tankers at Lajes
Lusa counted 17 KC-46 refuelling tankers parked on Terceira, up from six in September, after a reinforcement on 11 October. No ministry has commented on the arrivals; the government's last word on the base was the prime minister's defence of its legality on 9 October, while a criminal inquiry stays open.
