Mental Health Support in Portugal
Where to get mental health help in Portugal: the SNS 24 counselling line in English, your family doctor, hospital care, medicines, and what to do in a crisis.
Good morning. Here is your Friday briefing for 6 November 2026: the day's essential Portugal stories for residents, immigrants and anyone keeping an eye on the country, below this week's featured guide.
- Storm Bruna: all of Madeira is on orange warnings for rain and wind from 18:00 on Saturday, and the mainland faces a wet, windy week from Sunday.
- Almaraz: a reactor at Spain's nuclear plant on the Tagus shut down automatically on Thursday; the Spanish regulator rates it level 0 and Portugal's environment agency sees no risk.
- Au Kam San: a Macau court has jailed the Portuguese citizen and former pro-democracy legislator for 12 and a half years, in the territory's first state security trial.
- Ronaldo: Cristiano Ronaldo has retired from international football, and Jorge Jesus names his first squad without him at noon today.
- Obesity medicines: pharmacies sold a record 731,000 euros a day of them in the first half of 2026, according to Infarmed data reported by Expresso, almost all paid by patients.
- Council housing: Portalegre's mayor calls the housing institute's renovation rules "nonsense" as work on 108 council homes runs late.
Storm Bruna Reaches Madeira
IPMA has named storm Bruna and put all four Madeira warning areas on orange for rain and wind from 18:00 on Saturday to early Sunday, with gusts of up to 130 km/h in the mountains. Eight mainland districts have yellow rain warnings this afternoon, and IPMA expects persistent rain from Sunday until at least 13 November.
A Reactor Stop Across the Border
Unit I at Spain's Almaraz nuclear plant, on the Tagus near the Portuguese border, tripped offline on Thursday morning after an electrical protection on its main transformer acted. Spain's regulator rated the event INES level 0, with no impact on people or the environment. Portugal's APA is monitoring and says no protective measures are needed; RADNET readings are public online.
A Portuguese Citizen Jailed in Macau
Macau's first-instance court has sentenced Au Kam San, a former pro-democracy legislator who holds Portuguese nationality, to 12 years and six months for subversion, links with foreign organisations and breach of secrecy. It is the first case under Macau's State Security Law since the handover. His lawyer says Portugal and the EU should demand he be allowed to leave.
Ronaldo Hands Back the Number 7
Cristiano Ronaldo announced in a video on Thursday that he has played his last game for Portugal, ending a 23-year international career of 234 caps and 146 goals. The decision follows a 30-day ban for leaving the Copenhagen camp in September. Jorge Jesus, who had planned to recall him, names his squad for Denmark in Braga and Wales in Cardiff today.
Record Spending on Weight-Loss Drugs
Portuguese pharmacies sold 731,000 euros a day of obesity medicines from January to June, a record, according to Infarmed data reported by Expresso and Observador. More than 528,000 packs were sold in six months, close to the whole of 2025, and three quarters contain tirzepatide (Mounjaro). The SNS will pay only 15 percent, for a narrow group of patients, from February 2027.
Portalegre's Council Homes Run Late
Portalegre's mayor, Fermelinda Carvalho, told Wednesday's council meeting that IHRU's demands for heat pumps and solar panels make council home renovations "extremely costly" and scare off builders. The council's plan to refurbish 108 homes is behind schedule, she admitted. Meanwhile 86 households applied for just 10 council flats at supported rent, and 26 were admitted.
