The Tesla Model 3 Topped Portugal's June Car Sales — the First Time an Electric Car Led the Month
ACAP data show the Tesla Model 3 was Portugal's best-selling car in June 2026 with 1,231 units, up 77% year-on-year, ahead of the Peugeot 2008 and Dacia Sandero. A EUR4,000 state EV grant runs until 27 July, and BYD's new Dolphin undercuts rivals from about EUR29,994.
For the first time, an electric car has finished a month as Portugal's single best-selling vehicle. Figures from ACAP (Associação Automóvel de Portugal, the Portuguese Automobile Association) show the Tesla Model 3 led all models in June 2026 with 1,231 units registered — a jump of more than 77% on the same month last year.
June's podium
- Tesla Model 3: 1,231 units
- Peugeot 2008: 927 units
- Dacia Sandero: 883 units
In all, 26,349 new light passenger cars were registered in June. Over the first half of 2026, the market reached 124,026 registrations, and the ranking tightens over the longer stretch: the Peugeot 2008 leads the half-year at 4,824 units (up 1.1%), ahead of the Peugeot 208 on 3,781 and the Tesla Model 3 third at 3,715 — itself up 41.3% year-on-year — followed by the Citroën C3 and the Dacia Sandero.
A turnaround for Tesla
The result is a sharp reversal. Only weeks ago Tesla was posting some of its weakest Portuguese months in years, and the brand has faced a bumpy stretch across Europe. A refreshed Model 3 and aggressive pricing appear to have brought buyers back — and the surge sits inside a broader electric shift, with the market well ahead of the pace it set in the spring.
Competition is intensifying at the affordable end. Chinese maker BYD has brought its first Europe-designed model, the Dolphin, to Portugal from around €29,994 with VAT — undercutting several established rivals and pressuring incumbents just as electric demand climbs.
The subsidy window is open
Timing helps. The state's zero-emission purchase incentive is running again this year: the Fundo Ambiental (Environmental Fund) reopened its Incentivo Veículos Elétricos, offering €4,000 towards a battery-electric car for private buyers, with applications open until 27 July 2026 or until the money runs out.
What this means for expats and residents
- If you are buying electric, move soon: The €4,000 grant is capped and first-come; the window closes at the end of July unless funds last longer.
- More choice, better prices: New entrants like BYD are dragging sticker prices down, so shop across brands rather than defaulting to the familiar names.
- Mind the running costs: Electric owners still pay the annual IUC road tax, and rules on modifying or converting a registered car changed this year — check before you retrofit.
One strong month does not settle a market, and the Peugeot 2008 still leads the year. But an electric car topping the monthly chart is a milestone Portugal has not seen before — and, with a subsidy live and prices falling, it may not be the last time the Model 3 sits at number one.
