The Braga Brief: Week of March 13, 2026

This Week in Braga

City Budget Gets the Green Light — And It's a Big One. Braga's Municipal Assembly approved the 2026 budget last Saturday, and it comes with some headline numbers. The revised Master Plan (PDM) opens up an additional 1,500 hectares for construction across the municipality, with a focus on distributing development to all parishes — not just the city centre. The big infrastructure play? Full central government funding has been secured for the Circular Rodoviária Externa de Braga (CREB), the long-awaited outer ring road that should eventually ease the city's growing traffic headaches.

€15.5 Million for Roads and Sidewalks. If you've ever cursed a Braga pothole (and who hasn't?), there's good news. The city council approved a framework agreement worth €15.5 million to repair roads and pavements across the municipality. Deputy Mayor João Rodrigues called road maintenance "a permanent priority" and noted that work on the Variante do Fojo is already underway. Expect orange cones and detours — but hopefully smoother rides after.

Weather Watch This Weekend. IPMA has issued a yellow warning for the Braga district from Friday evening through Saturday afternoon. It's not about rain this time — coastal wave swells of 4 to 5 metres are expected along the northwest coast. If you had beach plans for Esposende or Ofir, maybe swap them for a cozy café day instead.

SC Braga's Europa League Setback. Tough night in Budapest on Thursday as SC Braga fell 2-0 to Ferencváros in the Europa League Round of 16 first leg. Carlos Vicens' side now faces a steep climb in the return leg at the Estádio Municipal. The city will be buzzing for that home match — expect packed restaurants and a lot of nervous energy.

Tech & Business

Bosch Goes Electric (Bikes) in Braga. After a turbulent year that included layoffs, Bosch's Braga campus is pivoting in an exciting direction. The German giant has chosen its Braga facility to house a brand-new R&D division focused on advanced eBike Systems — developing next-generation electric bicycle technology. They're actively recruiting software engineers, AI specialists, and hardware engineers, with plans to double the team by year's end. If you're in tech and looking for work in Braga, this is worth a look.

Startup Braga Opens Applications. The latest round of the Startup Braga Acceleration Program is now accepting applications — and you've got about 18 days left to apply. Run out of the innovation district near the university, the program has become one of northern Portugal's most important launchpads for early-stage companies. Whether you're building in healthtech, sustainability, or SaaS, it's a solid opportunity with mentorship, workspace, and investor access.

University & Students

UMinho Makes History with Dual Degrees. The Universidade do Minho just became the first public university in Portugal to offer dual bachelor's degrees. Starting with the 2026/27 academic year, students can enrol in five combined programmes: Economics + Management, Management + International Business, Economics + International Business, and two more. It's a significant move that positions UMinho as an innovator in Portuguese higher education — and makes Braga an even more attractive destination for students.

UMinho Joins Global Sustainability Network. In other university news, UMinho was admitted to the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), an international network promoting digital technologies for sustainable development. It's a recognition of the research happening in Braga's labs around green tech and responsible innovation.

Open Days Wrapped Up. UMinho's annual "Portas Abertas" event took place March 5-7 at the Azurém campus in Guimarães. Thousands of prospective students got a look at what life in the Minho region is all about. If you missed it and have teenagers eyeing university, keep UMinho on the radar.

Expat Corner

Semana Santa Is Coming — Here's What You Need to Know. Braga's famous Holy Week celebrations run from March 29 to April 5 this year, and if you haven't experienced them yet, you absolutely should. This is one of the oldest and most spectacular Semana Santa traditions in Europe, drawing over 100,000 visitors annually. The Procissões dos Passos (Processions of the Stations of the Cross) are already making their way through surrounding parishes — Figueiredo and Real host theirs this Sunday, March 15.

Practical tip: Book restaurants early for Holy Week. The historic centre gets packed, parking becomes a nightmare, and popular spots fill up fast. If you're new to Braga, the processions through Rua do Souto and around the Sé Cathedral are the ones to see. They're hauntingly beautiful, even if you're not religious.

NIF & Finanças Update. A quick reminder for recently-arrived expats: if you're still waiting on your NIF appointment, the Braga Finanças office has been running smoother lately with the online pre-booking system. Get your documents ready (passport, proof of address, and a fiscal representative if you're non-EU) and book through the Portal das Finanças. Don't show up without an appointment — they'll turn you away.

Weekend Pick: Procissão dos Passos in Figueiredo

This Sunday, head to the parishes of Figueiredo and Real for the traditional Procissão dos Passos. These intimate, community-led processions are a beautiful preview of Semana Santa — less crowded than the main event but just as atmospheric. Expect candlelight, traditional hymns, and a real sense of local devotion. It's free, it's cultural, and it's the kind of thing that makes living in Braga special. Dress warmly — March evenings in the Minho still have bite.
