The Braga Brief, Week of 28 August 2026: Sp. Braga Reach a European League Phase for the First Time, the Minho Metropolitan Push Gets a Shopping List, and the PJ Closes an €80,000 Scam File

Good morning from the Minho. The district's football club reached somewhere no Braga side has been before, two mayors put a shopping list to a metropolitan idea, and the Judiciária closed a two-year file on a scam that ran through the region's classified ads. Braga reach a European league phase for the first time

A goalless draw is rarely worth celebrating. This one was. On Thursday night in Vienna, Sporting de Braga drew 0-0 with Áustria Viena and went through 2-0 on aggregate to the league phase of the Conference League, a stage the club has never reached. It was pragmatic rather than memorable: the hosts had the better of the first 20 minutes, and Braga's clearest chance came just past the hour when Travassos ran through and forced a save. Getting there took three ties: Železničar Pančevo, Dinamo Minsk, then the Austrians. The reward is roughly €3.1 million and a place in a 36-team table. Only one Portuguese club has managed it before, Vitória de Guimarães in 2024/25, which makes the Minho the only region with two names on that list. The draw is at noon Lisbon time today in Monte Carlo: six opponents, three at home and three away, first matchday 15 October.

The best league form in the district, though, belongs to Barcelos. Gil Vicente beat Casa Pia 2-0 on Monday for two wins from two, and they are the only side who can still catch FC Porto, because their outstanding fixture is the Minho derby against Sp. Braga postponed a fortnight ago by a stomach bug. It has still not been rescheduled. Vitória de Guimarães took their first win of the season on Sunday.

The Minho metropolitan push gets a shopping list

Five weeks after Braga and Guimarães lit the fuse on an Área Metropolitana do Minho, mayor João Rodrigues has begun describing what it would do. After a first working meeting with Guimarães mayor Ricardo Araújo, which he called the "kickoff", he named mobility, culture, civil protection, spatial planning and investment attraction as the areas for joint action. It starts with the Braga district, may extend to Viana do Castelo, and would become Portugal's third metropolitan area, after Lisbon and Porto. The obstacle is procedural and not small: there is no legal route to creating one today, so parliament has to legislate first. The mayors have asked to meet Prime Minister Luís Montenegro in September. Rodrigues parked the question the district asks first, saying which city would be the capital is not a priority discussion. Two years, dozens of victims, and a fake buyer on the other end

The Polícia Judiciária's Braga unit closed an operation on Monday that began with fraud complaints in 2024 and ended with eight people detained, four women and four men aged 24 to 48. The method was ordinary; the organisation was not. The group scanned online sale listings, approached sellers posing as buyers, and split the work between those who found the ads, made first contact, handled the conversation, and a network of money mules whose accounts broke the trail. More than twenty victims have been identified and about €80,000 taken, the largest single loss around €16,000 on a car sale. Most victims are in the Minho while the suspects are almost all from the centre and south, which is why the six house searches landed as far away as Nazaré, Évora and Setúbal. UMinho's two-in-one degrees fill on the first try

The University of Minho launched the first double bachelor's degrees in Portuguese public higher education this year, and three of the five sold out in the first placement round: Economics and Management (20 places, last student in at 17.98), Economics and Foreign Business (10 places, 17.1) and Management and Foreign Business (10, 18.23). Maths and Physics filled four of ten, Physics and Chemistry none, so 16 places roll into the second phase. Viana's market restarts, after a convent turned up underneath it

Work on Viana do Castelo's new municipal market, suspended in January when the diggers found something older, restarts on 1 September. The excavation turned up the non-religious parts of the sixteenth-century Convento de São Bento: dormitories, infirmaries, service areas. There is a symmetry to it, since the municipality demolished exactly those buildings in 1891 to put up the town's first covered market. Arcos de Valdevez is putting more than €1 million into the air operations centre that serves civil protection across the Viana do Castelo, Braga and Vila Real districts: crew quarters, a hangar extension and runway lighting, all due before the next fire season. Ponte de Lima's master plan revision reaches a vote in October, eight years after it began, with the plan in force dating from 2005. The GNR seized 530 items of clothing and 24 handbags carrying counterfeit marks at the weekly fair in Vieira do Minho. And two cousins from Madrid swam the mouth of the Minho from A Guarda to Caminha, unaware that crossing a navigable bar is banned; the fine runs from €400 to €2,500.

Braga learn their six European opponents at noon today. Next Friday the Noite Branca returns, running 4 to 6 September, with stages on the Praça Municipal and the Avenida Central for Ana Moura, Tiago Bettencourt, GNR, Slow J and Anselmo Ralph, and museums open late and free.
