The Braga Brief, Week of 4 September 2026: The Noite Branca Opens the City Tonight, the Museu da Imagem Reopens After Seven Years, and Sp. Braga Draw a Scandinavian Autumn
Your weekly roundup from the Minho: three nights of free late-opening museums and two music stages, a museum shut since 2019 back with a row about why it took so long, a first league win in the Minho derby, and two main arteries going under the digger on Monday.
Good morning from the Minho. Braga spends the next three nights with its museums open late and its avenues given over to music, a museum shut since 2019 finally lets the public back in, and the football club has a league win and a map of northern Europe to plan for. Here is your roundup for 29 August to 4 September.
The Noite Branca takes the city tonight
It starts today. The Noite Branca runs from 4 to 6 September under a new visual identity and a new line, "Em Braga, a noite tem outro ritmo", which the council calls a return to the format's original spirit: a city at play with its doors open. Two stages carry the music, on the Praça Municipal and the Avenida Central, with Ana Moura, Tiago Bettencourt, GNR, Fernando Daniel, Papillon, Slow J, Mizzy Miles and Anselmo Ralph across the weekend, and Bárbara Tinoco closing on Sunday.
The part worth planning around is quieter and free. The museums and heritage sites open at night in a single circuit, and several of them open rooms you cannot normally see. At the Sé Catedral, Friday and Saturday at 15:00, that means the Sacristia-Mor, the Coro Alto, the Varandim da Galilé and the courtyard over the cloister. The Museu de Arqueologia D. Diogo de Sousa runs a lantern-lit nature walk at 20:30 on both nights,, and the Torre Medieval of the Museu Pio XII gives the 360-degree view. Among the galleries, the Muzeu dst has more than a hundred works by 84 artists including Picasso and Helena Almeida, and Forum Arte Braga shows "Solares Portugueses" from the Vasco Collection, with Paula Rego and Júlio Pomar. The Museu da Imagem reopens after seven years
The Museu da Imagem reopens on Friday, seven years after it closed in 2019 with failing roofs and insulation. The rehabilitation cost more than €500,000 and covered the whole building: public reception, staff working conditions and the conservation of the collection.
The reopening came with a row attached. The previous council, under Ricardo Rio, declared the works finished on 31 October 2025 and toured the building that day. Mayor João Rodrigues, a councillor then, says he was not told of the visit and that the museum did not open "because the works had not finished", declining to say what was outstanding. The culture councillor, Catarina Miranda, says the contractor only handed the building over in March. Details at Observador →
What reopens is a one-week show, "Máquinas de Ver", drawn from the museum's own holdings: cameras and equipment from the city's old photographic studios, with their stamps, signage and register books. After that week it closes again to prepare for the Encontros da Imagem, from 18 September.
A first league win, and six European opponents
Monday night at the Estádio Municipal gave Braga their first league win of the season and the Minho derby with it: Sp. Braga 1-0 Vitória de Guimarães, in the fourth round, settled on 79 minutes by Diego Rodrigues, the under-21 international, minutes after he came off the bench. Braga sit ninth on four points with two games still to play; Guimarães are twelfth on three, with three defeats in four. Match report at Observador →
One of those games in hand is still the home fixture against Gil Vicente, called off in August by a stomach bug in the squad. It has yet to be given a date.
The draw in Monaco, held the day last week's brief went out, sent Braga north. Three of their six Conference League fixtures are in Scandinavia. Away: Copenhagen (15 October), Aarhus (5 November) and Brann of Norway (10 December). At home: Gent (22 October), KuPS of Finland (26 November) and Albania's Egnatia (17 December), the last of those making their debut in a European main stage. The top eight of the 36 go straight to the last 16.
Two main arteries go under the digger on Monday
If you drive in Braga, the calendar matters. From 7 September, resurfacing closes the Estação area to cars overnight, between 20:00 and 07:00: the Rua Nova da Estação, the Largo da Estação, the Rua Irmãos Roby, the Rotunda Lions Clube, the Rua Andrade Corvo and the Rua do Caires. Daytime traffic stays open but restricted. The council has set that at 75 days, extendable a week at a time.
The same day, the Avenida 31 de Janeiro goes to 60 days of repaving between the Avenida João XXI junction and the Largo da Senhora-a-Branca. Three phases narrow the carriageway by two lanes; the fourth shuts the junction with the Rua 25 de Abril outright.
Also this week
A 21-year-old was shot in the head in a café in Vizela in the early hours of Wednesday and is in intensive care at the Hospital de Braga in a very serious condition. The Judiciária says the café's 25-year-old owner was showing an illegal firearm to friends when it went off; he has been made an arguido but not detained. It lands in a week when we reported that the PSP took in 265 firearms in two months nationally.
From 1 November, recreational gathering of cockles and any other bivalve is banned along the entire international stretch of the river Minho, from Melgaço to the mouth at Caminha, on public-health grounds, until a management plan is approved. The rule is new in the Diário da República notice setting the 2026/27 season. The Caminha port captain, Fernando Vieira Pereira, explained the logic: commercial harvesting was already barred, but the stretch is not a designated production zone, so the IPMA never monitors the shellfish there.
And the Fortaleza de Valença hosts its Medieval Market from Friday to Sunday, built this year around the 1509 visit of Duarte de Armas, the royal squire sent to draw the frontier fortresses for the Livro das Fortalezas. Craftsmen, musicians, mounted tournaments and fire shows, inside walls that are a national monument and part of a joint UNESCO bid with Almeida and Marvão.
The week ahead
Noite Branca tonight through Sunday, and the Museu da Imagem opens on Friday for one week only. From Monday, plan around the Estação and the Avenida 31 de Janeiro. The Encontros da Imagem open on 18 September, and the European autumn starts in Copenhagen on 15 October.
