The Braga Brief, Week of 11 September 2026: Portugal Return to the Estádio Municipal in November, Sp. Braga Lose Their First League Game, and Viana's New Market Goes to Court

Good morning from the Minho. The national team has a date in Braga for the first time in four years, the football club followed a win in Alverca with a defeat in the same stadium four days later, and four councils along the Ave have agreed that a floating weed is nobody's problem alone. Here is your roundup for 5 to 11 September.

Portugal come back to Braga on 14 November

The Federação Portuguesa de Futebol confirmed on Thursday that Portugal will play Denmark at the Estádio Municipal de Braga on Saturday 14 November, at 19:45, in the fifth round of Group A4 of the Nations League. It is the last home fixture of the group stage, the first senior international in Braga in four years, and the fifth of six matches under Jorge Jesus, who replaced Roberto Martínez after the World Cup.

The federation reached for the obvious precedent. The last time Portugal met Denmark on that pitch, in October 2015, they won 1-0 with a João Moutinho goal and qualified for the European Championship they went on to win. Moutinho turned 40 this week, still on the Sp. Braga books.

A win, then a first defeat, in the same borrowed ground

Sp. Braga went to Alverca on Saturday and came back with three points: 1-2, Chiquinho's penalty on 27 minutes overturned by Pau Víctor goals on 50 and 60. Four days later they were back at the same ground, and lost. The catch-up third-round fixture away to Estrela da Amadora was moved to Alverca because Estrela's Estádio José Gomes had been closed by Liga Portugal over the state of its pitch. Braga led inside five minutes through a Gabri Martínez strike from distance, then conceded twice to the Romanian Ianis Stoica. Estrela 2-1 Sp. Braga.

It is Braga's first defeat of the season, in four league games and six Conference League qualifiers. They stay eighth on seven points, with a game in hand; the still-unbeaten Estrela moved on to nine. Off the pitch, the club opened its first outpost in China this week, the SC Braga Academy Hangzhou, with Huang Feng FC.

Four councils against one weed in the Ave

Vila Nova de Famalicão began pulling water hyacinth out of the Rio Ave on Tuesday, in Ribeirão and Fradelos. The plant, Eichhornia crassipes, is South American, spreads fast and mats over the surface, blocking sunlight and stripping oxygen out of the water. What makes this one worth noting is the structure. Famalicão is working with Trofa, Santo Tirso and Vila do Conde and with the Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente, because, as the civil protection councillor Vânia Marçal put it, the current carries the plant downstream and any isolated intervention would be pointless. It is the same lesson the Azores are learning about the Asian hornet: an invasive species caught late is a regional bill, not a municipal one.

A harder item from the same council: the Judiciária detained a 52-year-old over a forest fire set with a lighter in Landim on 11 July. He must report twice weekly and is barred from carrying lighters or matches.

A fall at the Tahiti waterfall

An 11-year-old fell four to five metres onto rocks at the cascata da Barja, the Peneda-Gerês pool everyone calls the cascata do Tahiti, on Wednesday, and was airlifted to the ULS de Braga with a suspected ankle fracture and mild head trauma. The Câmara de Terras de Bouro already has a €205,000 contract running at the site, because of the accident record there, and wants bathing banned in the pools where most of them happen.

The Alto Minho looks across the border

Galicia is building a 309-hectare logistics and industrial platform at Salvaterra and As Neves, opposite Monção, and expects it to employ more than a thousand people. The Associação Empresarial do Minho warned this week that the effects will not be automatically good for the Portuguese bank of the river: without coordinated rail and road links to the Port of Vigo, serviced industrial land and predictable licensing on this side, the new capacity simply captures investment that could have landed in the Alto Minho. Its president, Ramiro Brito, put the stake plainly, that the border can stop being a periphery and become a competitive advantage.

Viana's new market goes to court

The Tribunal Administrativo e Fiscal de Braga has admitted an injunction application from Vian'Acorda, a heritage association formed in June, which could halt construction of Viana do Castelo's new municipal market. The council has ten days to oppose. The market is going up on the footprint of the old Prédio Coutinho, taken down in 2022, and work restarted on 1 September after a January suspension for archaeology that turned up structures of the sixteenth-century Convento de São Bento. The association, led by the architect Rui Martins, says the design ignores the historic-centre detail plan, the underground level breaches water law on a flood-prone site by the Lima, and the archaeological survey was shallow. Mayor Luís Nobre says the council has always followed the law and will seek damages for any delay: "the collective interest outweighs the particular".

Elsewhere in the city, a fire on Wednesday afternoon at the Centro Paroquial de Darque, started during maintenance on a laundry duct, put 33 care-home residents and 42 continuing-care patients in a nursery school for the night. Nobody was hurt, and residents were back in the building by day.

The week ahead

The 36th Encontros da Imagem opens in Braga on Friday 18 September and runs to 1 November, under the title "Territórios do Imaginário / Lugares Encantados". Friday's openings start at 16:00 and move through the Palácio do Raio, the Museu Nogueira da Silva, the Casa Rolão, the zet Galeria, the SOMA and the Galeria da Estação; Saturday morning adds gnration and the Biblioteca Lúcio Craveiro da Silva. It is also why the Museu da Imagem, reopened only last week, has shut again to prepare.

Thirty minutes south, Contextile, the textile art biennial, runs in Guimarães until 29 November with Ai Weiwei as its guest. At the CIAJG, "Fabrication" hangs 420 children's backpacks on one wall and 200 life jackets on another, and shows bed linen woven by the Guimarães firm Lameirinho from yarn recycled out of destroyed military uniforms, some of them Ukrainian.
