No EU Country Added Jobs Faster Than Portugal Last Quarter, and at 5.49 Million People in Work the Count Has Never Been Higher

Eurostat's third estimate of the second quarter puts Portuguese employment up 1.0 percent on the quarter, the best in the EU, and 2.2 percent on the year, third behind Malta and Spain. The catch is that the workforce grew faster than output did.

IGAS opened process 104/2026-INS on 27 August, after a submission about how care is organised for women seeking a termination in Almada and Seixal. The hospital shut its information email the day it closed the clinic, and did not answer questions about where patients should go.

Portugal's Food and Economic Watchdog Adds 21 Inspectors to a Force of 235, After Opening 643 Criminal Cases and Suspending 183 Restaurants This Year

The ASAE inspected 30,700 economic operators in eight months, 8,600 of them online, and opened 643 criminal and 2,148 administrative proceedings. Operation Mesa Limpa alone closed 183 restaurants on the spot and seized four tonnes of food.

The Tax Authority has already collected 137.1 percent of what the budget expected for the whole year, and 45.3 percent more than in the same seven months of 2025. Late-payment interest runs at 7.221 percent and is uncapped. Compensatory interest is 4 percent and is capped.
