Walking the Caminho Português de Santiago in 2026 — A Practical Guide
The Caminho Português is the second-busiest Camino de Santiago and the only one that crosses Portugal — 243.5 km of inland Central Route, 274 km of mixed Coastal Way, 280 km of seafront Senda Litoral, plus the Pontevedra Variante Espiritual and the 613 km long-haul start from Lisbon. The new guide covers route distances, stage logistics, the Compostela qualifying threshold, the credencial process, the optimum walking windows by route, and the practical kit for an expat or resident planning a 2026 walk. Jerónimo Martins Q1 2026 Net Profit Falls 6.8% to €119 Million
The PSI's largest food retailer reported on 6 May a 6.8% decline in Q1 net profit to €119 million on a 6.3% sales increase to €8.9 billion. Pingo Doce led the quarter with €1.3 billion in Portugal sales (+7.5% reported, +5.7% LFL ex-fuel) — the chain's best LFL print in three quarters. Biedronka, the Polish discount anchor, added €6.2 billion (+3.6%, +2.3% LFL) and 12 new stores; Ara grew 23.6% in Colombia; Hebe added 14 new stores. EBITDA lifted 8.4% to €572 million on a 13-bp margin expansion. CEO Pedro Soares dos Santos cited "cautious consumers" facing rising fuel costs.
BCP Q1 2026 Net Profit Jumps 25.6% to €305.8 Million
Banco Comercial Português reported its strongest opening quarter in the post-restructuring era, with €265.4 million from Portugal (+21.2%) and over €70 million from Bank Millennium Poland. Net interest income held at €740 million; fees grew 8.2% to €218 million; ROE reached 15.9%. The board approved a €500 million ordinary-dividend distribution and a €400 million share-buyback authorisation — combined €900 million capital return that puts BCP near the top of Iberian peers. A €43 million net release of credit impairments confirmed zero stress in the €22.3 billion mortgage book.

Porto Metro's Linha Rubi Walks Out of the PRR Today
Economy Minister Castro Almeida confirmed on 7 May that the €352 million Casa da Música to Santo Ovídeo line is being removed from the PRR envelope due to a 22-month deadline gap. PRR rules require completion by 31 August 2026; the project's mechanical timeline runs through to 22 July 2028, with the Porto-side tunnel finishing March 2027, the Gaia tunnel April 2027, and the new Ponte D. Antónia Ferreira April 2028. €130.86 million already disbursed remains in scope; the residual €221 million will be substituted from the Fundo Ambiental, OE2026 and (pending EC sign-off) the Sustentável 2030 programme. The 6.4-kilometre, eight-station line is the structural backbone of Metro do Porto's 2030 expansion.
SNS Doctor Emergency-Overtime Diploma to Council of Ministers
The Government's diploma — sent to the Council of Ministers on 7 May — sets a 40% to 80% supplement on base salary for hours worked beyond the 250-hour annual cap (150 hours for part-time doctors), structured in 48-hour blocks. A separate 20% weekend-block top-up applies when a doctor commits at least 48 weekend hours over an eight-week window. The provision applies to permanent (quadro), tarefeiro and intern doctors. The supplement does not feed pension or holiday-pay bases. Monitoring sits with clinical and emergency-service directors. Publication in Diário da República is expected within ten working days.

Atmos Space Cargo Closes €27.5M Round With a Defence Pivot
The German-Portuguese in-space-logistics company holds the first commercial orbital re-entry and recovery licence in Portuguese airspace, and on 7 May closed a €27.5 million round led by Balnord and Expansion, with EIC Fund, OTB Ventures, HTGF, APEX Ventures, Seraphim, Faber and others. Cumulative capital exceeds €35 million. The round funds the Phoenix 2.1 reusable capsule's H2 2026 mission from the Açores' Santa Maria base, the new Atmos Works business unit serving defence and institutional clients, and Phoenix 3 development. A successful H2 2026 recovery would make Portugal the third European jurisdiction (after France/Kourou and Norway/Andøya) to host a commercial orbital recovery operation.

Portugal Earth Overshoot Day Lands on 7 May 2026
ZERO and the Global Footprint Network confirmed Portugal's annual Earth Overshoot Day for 2026 falls on 7 May — two days later than the 2025 print of 5 May. The 2.9-planets headline (the planetary capacity needed if everyone lived at Portuguese consumption levels) is unchanged. Portugal sits four days behind the EU-27 average of 3 May, and well after Luxembourg's 17 February but ahead of Hungary's 24 June. ZERO singles out food (animal-protein consumption at roughly 3× nutritional guidelines) and mobility (private car and aviation) as the two dominant footprint drivers, with recommendations focused on plant-protein agriculture, frequent-flyer surcharges, rail-investment priority, and a "having less, but of better quality" consumption shift.
