Académico de Viseu Climbs Back to the Primeira Liga After a 37-Year Wait — Sérgio Fonseca's Side Holds Sporting B to 0-0 at the Fontelo to Pip Torreense on Goal Difference

Académico de Viseu's 0-0 draw with Sporting B at the Fontelo on Saturday 16 May locks in second place on goal difference over Torreense, ending a 37-year exile from the Primeira Liga and giving Sérgio Fonseca's hometown side a fourth top-flight promotion.

Académico de Viseu Climbs Back to the Primeira Liga After a 37-Year Wait — Sérgio Fonseca's Side Holds Sporting B to 0-0 at the Fontelo to Pip Torreense on Goal Difference

Académico de Viseu ended a 37-year exile from Portugal's top flight on Saturday afternoon, securing promotion to the Liga Betclic with a goalless draw at home to Sporting B in the 34th and final round of the Liga 2 season. The point was enough for the Beira Alta side to lock down second place and the second automatic promotion slot behind champions Tondela, after a head-to-head and goal-difference scramble that went down to the last 90 minutes of the campaign.

The club from Viseu finished level with Torreense on 59 points, but the tie-breakers fell its way. The two sides had split their direct duel one apiece, and Académico's superior goal difference of +25 (58 goals scored, 33 conceded) outranked Torreense's +13 (46–33). Torreense did its part with a 4-0 win against an already-relegated Vizela, but the Oeste side now drops into the playoff round for the third promotion ticket.

A 37-year hiatus, contextualised

Académico de Viseu last appeared in Portugal's top division in the 1988/89 season, the fourth of four short spells the club managed during a decade that brought brief Primeira Liga campaigns in 1978/79, 1980/81 and 1981/82. The Viseu institution restructured under the GD Farminhão banner in 2005 to survive a financial crisis, returning to the football pyramid the long way round. Saturday's result therefore marks the club's fourth promotion to the top flight across its entire history — joining 1978, 1980 and 1988 in the honours book.

The coach who came up through the building

Coach Sérgio Fonseca began the season in charge of the under-23 side and was promoted to the senior bench in October, after Académico had collected just one win in the first seven matchdays. The hometown turnaround was sealed at the Estádio do Fontelo, the historic municipal ground that has hosted the club since 1928. 'É a minha terra, a minha gente' — 'It's my land, my people' — Fonseca told reporters after the final whistle, a line that resonates in a city of just under 100,000 inhabitants where the football club doubles as a cultural anchor. The squad managed the run-in despite a wobble of two defeats and three draws in the final seven matches, a stretch that compressed the gap with Torreense from five points to none.

What promotion changes

Académico's return adds a second mid-sized interior club to the Primeira Liga grid alongside Tondela, restoring a Beira Alta presence the top tier has missed for nearly four decades. The Fontelo, a multi-use stadium that already hosts athletics and concerts, will need to meet the Liga Portugal infrastructure standards for top-flight matches — including upgraded media facilities, away-fan segregation and broadcast access points. The club will publish its preliminary squad-retention plan and budget framework in the coming weeks, ahead of the pre-season opening in early July.

What This Means for Expats

  • Match-day logistics in Viseu: Top-flight matchdays will draw away supporters and TV crews to a city that has not handled that volume since 1989. Hotel booking pressure will rise on weekends Académico hosts Lisbon and Porto sides.
  • Cultural windfall for the interior: The promotion gives a domestic talking point to a region that international expat coverage rarely reaches. Local cafés, restaurants and viewing spots are likely to see a sharp lift.
  • Ticketing access: Liga Portugal central platform sells away tickets to non-members at face value — useful if you support a Primeira Liga club that travels to the Fontelo next season.
  • Beyond the headlines: The promotion sits in the same weekend as FC Porto's 31st title, the Women's Clássico at the Jamor and the Champions League race between Sporting and Benfica, making this one of the busiest domestic football weekends of the calendar.

Académico's first opponent of the 2026/27 Primeira Liga will be drawn when the calendar lands in late June.
