FC Porto Seals 31st Primeira Liga Title With a 1-0 Win at Santa Clara — Diogo Costa Hoists the Cup on the Ribeira After 22h Open-Top Parade and Drone Tribute to the Late Jorge Costa

FC Porto wrapped up the 2025-26 Primeira Liga on Saturday evening with a 1-0 away win at Santa Clara in Ponta Delgada, sealing the club's 31st national championship and the first under the head coach Francesco Farioli's first full season at the Estádio do Dragão. The result settled a title race that had stretched to the penultimate matchday after Porto opened a clear gap over Sporting CP and Benfica in the second half of the campaign.

By 22h the open-top parade had reached the Ribeira, where thousands of supporters packed the Douro waterfront and the streets running up to Avenida dos Aliados. Captain Diogo Costa lifted the trophy on the stage in front of the Câmara, telling the crowd: 'Obrigado por acreditarem em nós — o campeão voltou.' A fireworks display lit the river bank, followed by a drone-light show that traced a dragon over the Douro and the number 2 shirt worn by the late Jorge Costa — the former captain and FC Porto director who died in August 2025 and to whom this title is dedicated.

How Porto Sealed It

The single goal at the Estádio de São Miguel arrived in the second half from a set piece, with the rest of the match controlled through possession and pressing — the hallmark of Farioli's first season after his summer 2025 appointment. The win pushed Porto's points cushion beyond mathematical reach with a round still to play, ending Sporting's two-year reign as tetracampeão-blocked rivals and tipping the title back to Dragão soil for the first time since the 2021-22 season.

The defending champions Sporting CP closed the same weekend with their own Champions League berth on the line, a separate sub-plot covered in The Portugal Brief's Saturday note. Benfica's title arithmetic vanished mid-week with a draw at Vitória de Guimarães.

The Parade and the Crowd

The trio-eléctrico carrying the squad rolled from the Estádio do Dragão down towards the Sé do Porto and the Ribeira, stopping at landmark points for fan flares. Sub-23 squad members and the club's women's team joined the main bus for the final leg into Aliados, where the Câmara do Porto had cleared the square and authorised the drone show in coordination with ANAC. PSP Porto closed traffic on the Marginal corridor from 19h.

The drone tribute to Jorge Costa drew the biggest reaction of the night: a slow-moving silhouette of the centre-back's playing posture above the Douro, then the number 2 jersey hovering for almost a minute over the water. Porto's official communication called it 'um obrigado eterno ao Capitão Jorge.'

What Comes Next

The squad now turns to the final Primeira Liga round and to next month's Taça de Portugal final. The 31st league title is FC Porto's first since the 2021-22 campaign and arrives in Farioli's debut year on the bench, after the Italian coach replaced Vítor Bruno in the summer 2025 reshuffle that followed the departure of Sérgio Conceição. The 2026-27 UEFA Champions League group-stage draw is set for late August in Monaco.
