The Braga Brief, Week of 9 October 2026: Braga Puts the Pedreira Up for Sale or Concession, Barcelos Tenders a 35 Million Euro Cávado Clean-Up, and Ponte de Lima Gets a Food Research Centre
Your weekly roundup from the Minho: Braga's council negotiates the Pedreira's future with the club, Barcelos and two Alto Minho councils tender sewage works, a car damages the Bom Jesus stairway, and Sp. Braga host Sporting tonight.
Good morning from the Minho. Braga's council is negotiating to sell or lease the Pedreira to the club that plays there, Barcelos has put its biggest ever clean-up of the Cávado out to tender, and Ponte de Lima is getting a research centre for the region's food producers. Here is your roundup for 3 to 9 October.
The Pedreira, for sale or for a century
Two weeks after Sp. Braga put a 50 million euro price on renovating the Estádio Municipal, the council has said what it wants in return. Mayor João Rodrigues told reporters after Thursday's executive meeting that the future of the stadium, known as the Pedreira for the quarry it is cut into, will be settled with the club "very shortly". It could be a sale, he said, or "another kind of deal, a 100-year use, for example, in exchange for a payment". Nothing is closed.
The question came from Iniciativa Liberal councillor Rui Rocha. Rodrigues would not give a figure; under the previous council a sale price of "never less than" 15 million euros was floated. His one firm promise was that every euro from the deal will go to the Estádio 1.º de Maio, the city's older stadium, where a renovation project is being drawn up. It will keep its current layout, he said, but could become far more than a ground for athletics and football.
Cleaning up the Cávado and the Lima
Barcelos has opened a public tender worth 35.4 million euros for a new wastewater treatment plant, which the council calls the largest investment ever made in cleaning up the Cávado. It replaces a plant running since 1999 that the council calls technically obsolete. About 35 percent of what reaches it comes from industry, mostly textile dye works, so the new plant adds fine filters and ozone to strip out colour and stubborn compounds. More than 73,000 people should be connected. Bids close on 23 October and the works have 910 days.
Further north, Ponte de Lima has tendered a 4.6 million euro plant for the parish of Poiares (bids by 30 October, 720 days), and Arcos de Valdevez a 5.5 million euro sewer extension to Gondoriz and São Cosme e São Damião, part of a push to connect at least half the council's homes. Arcos expects EU funds to cover about 85 percent.
A food technology centre for the Alto Minho
The Government has authorised the Polytechnic University of Viana do Castelo to grant Ponte de Lima council a 30-year building right on up to 3,220 square metres of its agricultural school campus. That clears the way for 3AR, a 4.5 million euro centre for applied research and technology transfer in the agri-food sector. The council plans to tender the works this year and finish within two years, with 2.9 million euros (65 percent) from the Norte 2030 programme. The centre expects 40 skilled jobs by 2030 and will work with a unit in Melgaço devoted to vineyards and Alvarinho wine.
Damage on the Bom Jesus stairway
A car came off the road on Sunday morning as it descended from Bom Jesus do Monte towards the city centre, reportedly after meeting another vehicle on the wrong side of the road, and broke through a wall, steps and paving on the stairway. The GNR said two injured people were taken to hospital. Because the sanctuary is a World Heritage site, the Confraria that runs it says a specialist, accredited firm must assess the damage before any claim on the driver's insurance.
Courts, councils and campus
- The central criminal court in Guimarães sentenced a man to five years and ten months for trying to kill a GNR officer in Cabeceiras de Basto in June 2025 with a cut-down double-barrelled shotgun hidden in a bag. The officer spotted the barrels and, with two colleagues, wrestled him before he could fire. The ruling is not yet final.
- Viana do Castelo's municipal services opened 400 fine proceedings between January and September against people dumping rubbish outside bins and around recycling points.
- Researchers at the University of Minho's molecular and environmental biology centre and the University of Porto have developed a gel that releases a chemotherapy drug directly onto skin affected by melanoma, the most serious skin cancer, with 1,000 to 1,500 new cases a year in Portugal. Tests in living organisms come next.
Football and the clubs
The league returns tonight with Sp. Braga v Sporting at the Estádio Municipal at 20:15. Sporting coach Rui Borges noted that Braga have played five at home this season, won five and conceded none; Sporting have not won at Braga since November 2024. Vitória visit Benfica on Sunday.
Off the pitch at Vitória, the movement led by Viriato Sampaio, runner-up in the last club election, has formally asked for members to vote at October's general meeting on an independent audit of the SAD's finances from July 2022 to June 2026, including transfers and commissions. It says it presumes no wrongdoing.
Elsewhere, Braga's women lost the volleyball Super Cup 3-1 to FC Porto in Santo Tirso. For Portugal's Nations League visit to Braga against Denmark on 14 November, João Cancelo is suspended and Francisco Conceição, sent off against Norway, will also miss out.
