Emissions fell 2.8 percent to 52.0 million tonnes in 2024 as GDP grew 2.7 percent, a fourth straight year of decoupling and a first since 1995. A collapse in gas-fired power did the work; air transport and household fuel use went the other way.
Portuguese airports handled 7.9 million passengers in August, up 2.0 percent, INE says. Porto grew 7.1 percent over eight months against 0.8 percent at Lisbon, and Spain overtook France as the second country of origin and destination.
Exports rose 6.8 percent, but only 2.8 percent without fuel, whose export prices were up 37.7 percent. The INE also finds Brazil now supplies half of Portugal's crude oil imports.
Materials rose 7.1 percent and labour 8.0 percent, with diesel and copper wire up about 30 percent and not one tracked material cheaper. The INE also revised July down to 6.5 percent.
More households expect prices to rise faster over the next year than at any time since May, INE's September surveys show, while consumer confidence fell to -22.3 and firms in every sector plan to raise their own prices.
Food retail volumes slipped 0.3 percent in August, the first annual fall since December 2023, INE figures show. Specialised food shops such as butchers and bakers sold 6.5 percent less and cut jobs, while household goods rose 10.1 percent and overall retail grew 2.4 percent.
INE's monthly estimates show employment falling every month since May's record high, while unemployment held at 5.7 percent. The gap is people leaving the labour force, and the drop is concentrated among men.
