Almost Half a Million People in Portugal Live More Than an Hour From an Emergency Room, and Eleven Districts Cannot Keep a Doctor

The Ordem dos Medicos presented its study on retaining doctors in sparsely populated territories in Guarda on Friday. It names eleven areas, Faro and the islands among them, and asks for tax breaks, housing and loyalty payments.

Parliament Has Stopped the Clock on Its Own INEM Inquiry Until 30 November, Because Documents It Asked For Have Not Arrived

Resolution 246/2026 suspends the counting of the committee's operating period between 9 September and 30 November 2026, and says the suspension can be lifted early if the missing documentation arrives in full. The inquiry was constituted in September 2025 with a 90-day limit.

Norma 004/2026, signed on 2 September, runs the campaign from 16 September to 31 March 2027 and drops the eligibility gap that left some babies uncovered. The catch-up for children born since 1 April closes on 30 October.

The SNS Transparency Portal's daily tape shows 3,195 people waiting on 28 August, 23.5 percent above the same date last year. Long-stay units ran at 97.6 percent occupancy in July, and the count of long-stay beds fell by 57 over the year.

The national total barely moved: 1,672,130 people without an assigned family doctor in June, against 1,669,681 a year earlier. Underneath it the south added 66,786 and the north and centre removed 64,337. Loures and Odivelas is the worst unit in the country.
