Eurostat puts five inland Portuguese regions among the 189 in the EU where fewer than 55 percent of people are aged 20 to 64. Alto Tâmega e Barroso, at 50.8 percent, ranks near the bottom, while the islands and the Minho are the country's youngest.
Eurostat counts 11,190 non-EU nationals told to leave Portugal in the second quarter, behind only France, but only 330 recorded returns, 40 of them forced. Brazilians and Angolans received almost half the orders.
Eurostat's 2024 figures put Portugal fourth in the EU for food waste, with 105 kg per person thrown away at home. An EU target for 2030 would mean cutting the retail, restaurant and household total by about 45 kg per person.

Portugal's at-risk-of-poverty rate stalls at 15.4% on the 2025 EU-SILC reading, breaking the 2022–2024 downward trajectory. The €723 monthly threshold leaves more than 1.74 million Portuguese inside the perimeter; without pensions and social transfers the rate would sit at 40.7%.
