Portugal Wins UN Security Council Seat on First Ballot — 134 Votes Open Two-Year Term From January 2027

Portugal will sit on the United Nations Security Council from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2028 after collecting 134 of 191 valid votes in the 3 June ballot in New York, ahead of Austria (131) and Germany (104). It is the country's fourth election to the body — and the first to clear the threshold at the very first ballot. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro framed the seat as a platform to "promote peace and development", and Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel set ocean governance, climate-security and the protection of Portuguese-speaking communities in conflict zones as the incoming thematic priorities. The Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros will reinforce the New York mission ahead of January 2027, and the 2027 state budget is expected to carry a multi-million-euro line for translators and conflict-prevention analysts.

Agriculture Minister Brands €20 Million Farm Package Insufficient at Santarém Fair — José Manuel Fernandes Demands Coordinated EU Response

Agriculture Minister José Manuel Fernandes told reporters at the 62nd Feira Nacional da Agricultura (National Agriculture Fair) in Santarém on Saturday 6 June that the €20 million emergency package signed off by the Council of Ministers last week is "not sufficient" to cushion Portuguese farmers from rising fertiliser and energy bills. The package delivers €28 per hectare on irrigated land and €12 per hectare on rain-fed parcels, alongside a 50% lift in baseline farm-income support and a €660 million top-up to the PEPAC envelope. Fernandes warned that unilateral national subsidies risk unfair competition inside the single market and said he will press the case for a Brussels-level instrument at the next informal AGRIFISH Council meeting later this month.

Mecanismo de Continuidade Territorial Goes Live This Weekend — €119 Açores and €79 Madeira Round-Trip Caps Replace the Old €600 and €400 Reimbursement Ceilings

The new Mecanismo de Continuidade Territorial (Territorial Continuity Mechanism), Portugal's replacement for the old Subsídio Social de Mobilidade, entered into force on Saturday 6 June after publication in Diário da República. Açores residents will pay a maximum €119 round-trip to the continent — €89 for students — while Madeira residents face €79 and €59 ceilings. The reform also strips out the requirement that beneficiaries prove they are up to date with Autoridade Tributária and Segurança Social obligations. The Assembleia da República approved the law on 10 April with PS, Chega, BE, Livre, PAN and JPP support; PSD voted against, except six island deputies who broke ranks. President António José Seguro promulgated the text on 27 May with a public note warning that removing the ceiling "may produce diverse effects that will require careful regulation".

Saúde Treats 3,493 Bed-Blocking Patients as a National Priority — Ana Paula Martins Pushes 10-Year IPSS Pacts and Nursing-Home Family Doctors

Health Minister Ana Paula Martins called the country's bed-blocking caseload a "national priority" in remarks published on 5 June, after Direção Executiva do SNS data showed 3,493 patients occupied hospital beds at end-April despite holding clinical discharge clearances — a 14.4% drag on response capacity, equivalent to closing 14-15 hospital units of about 240 beds each. Of those, 405 are waiting on Tribunal de Família guardianship decisions, some for more than twelve months. The Ministério da Saúde launched the Sad+Saúde pilot in May 2026 with five IPSS — one per mainland region — bundling integrated home care with medical follow-up. If the pilot delivers, the ministry plans 10-year operating pacts to give the social sector the financial visibility to build new residential capacity.

Feira do Livro de Lisboa Reaches Its Big Weekend at Parque Eduardo VII — 96th Edition Spreads 350 Pavilions and 2,200 Events Across Seven Plazas Through 14 June

The 96th Feira do Livro de Lisboa (Lisbon Book Fair) hits its peak weekend at Parque Eduardo VII on 6-7 June, halfway through a 19-day run that ends on 14 June. APEL and the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa have stretched the fair to 350 pavilions representing roughly 900 editorial brands, with more than 2,200 programmed events across seven plazas. Saturday hosted the Noite do Policial crime-fiction marathon; Sunday delivers a public homage to António Lobo Antunes. The biggest structural novelty is the Espaço dos Pequenos Editores, sheltering 47 independent publishers under a shared front-of-house. An open-air cinema platform and a Silent Reading tent with noise-cancelling headphones round out the operational redesign, and APEL says revenues are tracking 8% above the 2025 edition through the first ten days.

ASAE Cracks a €600,000 Counterfeit Auto-Parts Ring Across Gaia, Leiria and Lisbon — OLAF-Backed Operation Recovers 14,629 Filters, Bearings and Brake Cylinders

The Autoridade de Segurança Alimentar e Económica (ASAE, Authority for Food and Economic Safety) has dismantled a counterfeit auto-parts network spanning three Portuguese districts, seizing 14,629 falsified components worth over €600,000. The Lisbon-headquartered regulator confirmed the operation late on 3 June after coordinated raids in Vila Nova de Gaia, Leiria and Lisbon. Technical and financial backing came from the EU's Organismo Europeu de Luta Antifraude (OLAF, European Anti-Fraud Office). The recovered stock spans oil, fuel, air and cabin filters, plus precision bearings, control valves, belt tensioners and brake cylinders — categories ASAE described as high-volume, high-rotation, and the hardest for consumers to identify as fake. Criminal charges include contrafação, uso ilegítimo de marca and fraude sobre mercadorias under the Código da Propriedade Industrial.
