IMF Slashes Portugal Growth to 1.9% — Inflation Forecast Jumps to 3.1%

The International Monetary Fund's April 2026 World Economic Outlook has cut Portugal's growth forecast to 1.9 per cent, down from 2.1 per cent in October and well below the government's budget assumption of 2.3 per cent. Inflation is now expected to average 3.1 per cent this year — more than double the Fund's previous estimate — as the Persian Gulf energy crisis feeds through to consumer prices. The IMF also expects the ECB to raise rates to at least 2.25 per cent, reversing earlier easing. One silver lining: unemployment is now forecast at 5.9 per cent, better than the 6.3 per cent predicted six months ago.

CGTP Marches on Parliament — Schools and Building Sites Shut

Portugal's largest trade union confederation is staging its biggest demonstration in years today, marching from Saldanha to the Assembleia da República to protest the government's proposed labour reform. Teachers, construction workers, and municipal staff have all walked out on 24-hour strikes, disrupting schools, public services, and building sites nationwide. The CGTP is demanding the withdrawal of the entire employment package, which it calls an "assault on workers' rights," along with significant wage and pension increases. President Seguro has signalled he would veto the reform if it passes parliament without Concertação Social consensus.

Seville's April Fair Honours Portugal — 500 Years of Iberian History

When Seville's Feria de Abril lights up on 20 April, the monumental gateway will carry a Portuguese theme for the first time, celebrating the 500th anniversary of the marriage between Emperor Carlos V and Infanta Isabel of Portugal. Italian architect Davide Gambini designed the portada drawing on the Portuguese pavilion at the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition and the Cenador de Carlos V at the Royal Alcázar. The fair runs from 21 to 26 April and will feature 200 additional casetas this year.
