AIMA Opens Online Renewal to Residence Permits Expiring by 31 January 2027
AIMA's Renewals Portal now accepts residence permits expiring between 1 July 2025 and 31 January 2027. Who qualifies, how the online renewal works, and what happens if your card has already lapsed.
Immigrants whose residence permits run out in January 2027 can now apply to renew them online. The Renewals Portal of AIMA, the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum, now states that it accepts renewal of residence permits "whose term expires after 1 July 2025 and up to 31 January 2027". Holders of permits that expire later "must wait for the portal to open to the following months", the notice adds.
DN Brasil reported that the portal was updated on Friday 23 October, and that until then it had taken permits expiring up to December, a window opened on 3 August. AIMA has published no news item on the change.
Who can use the portal
According to the portal, it currently handles three kinds of request:
- renewal of ordinary residence permits that expire between 1 July 2025 and 31 January 2027;
- renewal of residence permits for investment (the ARI, or golden visa) that expired from 22 February 2020 onwards, up to 31 January 2027;
- certificates and permanent residence cards for EU citizens and their family members.
Ordinary permits (not ARI) that expired between 22 February 2020 and 30 June 2025 are not renewed on this portal. AIMA directs those holders to its separate platform, services.aima.gov.pt. A change of address is not made on the portal either: AIMA asks holders to use its contact form and choose "Portal de Renovações > Comunicar/retificar morada".
How the online renewal works
When AIMA launched the portal in July 2025, its notice set out the procedure, which still applies:
- your tax and Social Security position must be in order before you apply;
- you pay the fee for your type of permit in advance, and attach copies of the documents the law requires;
- AIMA then checks your criminal record, any precautionary or security measures, and your means of subsistence in Portugal;
- you are called to an AIMA office for biometrics only if the renewal is approved and your biometric data or passport has expired.
Fees vary by permit type and are listed in AIMA's fee table under Portaria n.º 307/2023, which carries a separate column of charges for requests made digitally.
Timing, and permits that have already expired
The government's gov.pt service page (updated 1 September 2026) says a temporary residence permit should be renewed at least 30 days before it expires, and that the request can be made from 90 days before the expiry date. Renewal is open to holders of a valid permit or one that expired less than six months ago. Anyone whose permit expired more than six months ago must file a new residence application at an AIMA counter instead. In-person renewal is by appointment only, and it is the IRN (the registry institute) that contacts eligible people to book one.
AIMA's pages point to no general extension of validity for permits expiring now. The last one, Decreto-Lei n.º 85-B/2025, extended the validity of residence permits only until 15 October 2025, according to AIMA's notice at the time. A holder who lets a permit lapse and waits risks running past the six-month line.
What to do
If your card expires by 31 January 2027, the portal will take your request now; have your tax and Social Security position in order first. If it expires later, check the portal again: the window has been moving forward in steps.
