Portuguese Diesel Sets an All-Time Record at the Pump This Week After a Fifteen-Cent Jump, With Petrol 95 Near 2.12 Euros a Litre
The national average price of diesel has never closed a week above 2.131 euros a litre, the figure set in the week of 6 April this year, which itself displaced a record of 2.124 euros from October 2022. That mark is expected to fall on Monday. ANAREC, the fuel retailers' association, projects a rise of about 15 cents on diesel and about 10 cents on petrol, taking diesel to roughly 2.17 euros and petrol 95 to roughly 2.12 euros. Its vice-president Mafalda Trigo told Antena 1 the numbers were a projection from international markets, with confirmation due in the afternoon; Galp and the Automovel Clube de Portugal have both forecast above 10 cents on each grade. Mid-week the DGEG averages still stood at 2.019 euros for diesel and 2.022 for petrol. In the 591 weeks of the comparable DGEG series since April 2015, diesel has averaged above two euros in just nine. Crude has added roughly 10 percent in a week and refining margins have widened on top. The government widened the ISP discount by three cents on Friday; Luis Montenegro ruled out a VAT cut, said the state is "not collecting a cent more", put this year's ISP discount at about 700 million euros and said a proposal reviving the extraordinary support for coloured diesel is being finished.
Only St Gallen Finishes Above Nova SBE: Five Portuguese Management Masters Now Sit Inside the Financial Times Top 100
The Financial Times Masters in Management 2026 ranking puts the Nova School of Business and Economics second in the world, up two places, on a weighted alumni salary of 131,640 dollars. Only the University of St Gallen, first for the fifteenth time, finishes above it; Nova SBE now sits ahead of Shanghai Jiao Tong's Antai college, INSEAD, HEC Paris, ESCP, Vlerick, IESE and the Stockholm School of Economics. It was 23rd as recently as 2021. Its strongest indicator was aims achieved, at 92.2 percent, and the school reports 11th place worldwide on the employer-network measure and a fifteen-place improvement on its careers service. Four other Portuguese schools are in the hundred: Catolica Lisbon climbs five to 25th, ISEG enters the table for the first time at 59th with an eighth place worldwide on career progress, Iscte Business School is 62nd after rising 25, and Catolica Porto is 66th after the largest Portuguese climb, 29 places. The table scores a hundred programmes on nineteen criteria weighted heavily toward salary and international mobility, which is why it reads so differently from the Shanghai and QS university tables, where Lisbon and Porto both slipped this year.
A Cantanhede Metalworker Commits Two Million Euros to a Fourth Hall Because Defence Already Buys a Fifth of What It Makes
Vesam, a metal-structures maker in Cantanhede, will spend about two million euros on a fourth industrial hall, adding more than 2,000 square metres and roughly doubling its area for pre-assembly and testing. Construction starts in October and the unit should be fully operational by the middle of 2027. Founder and chief executive Filipe Santos told ECO that defence already represents about 20 percent of turnover, in two areas: metal structures for military naval construction, and structures and equipment tied to projectile launch systems. Customers are not named, on sector confidentiality; the company says it supplies large European integrators. Space is newer, with first projects on antennas, telescopes and associated platforms, and Vesam works as a supplier to the firms holding the prime contracts. Aeronautics remains a core line, including launch pad structures that have to be fully assembled and tested before painting. All engineering, R&D and manufacturing happen in Portugal, with assembly in the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United States, and subsidiaries in France and the US. International markets are more than 95 percent of activity, turnover is close to 10 million euros, and in Africa the company has passed 200 bridges designed, made and assembled.
The Government Abandons Its Plan to Charge for the Company Digital Wallet, With Vehicle Documents, Insurance and Licences Due Before October
When the Carteira Digital da Empresa launched on 26 January, the Minister for State Reform Goncalo Matias said it was free and left open the possibility that more advanced features would not be. That second half has gone. "The Carteira Digital da Empresa is made available to companies free of charge, and no changes to that service are foreseen at the level of costs," an official source at the Ministry of State Reform told ECO, as the largest batch of new services yet prepares to load: the Documento Unico Automovel, insurance documents and alvaras, all before the end of September. The wallet is a section of the id.gov.pt app rather than a separate product, and Portugal was the first EU member state to field one. It is open to individual entrepreneurs as well as company managers, and its first phase carried the electronic company card, the tax situation, the Social Security contributory declaration and the entry in the Central Register of Beneficial Owners, each updating automatically and validating in real time by QR code. Still signalled but undated: the permanent commercial certificate, SME certifications, electronic signature, electronic notifications and deadline alerts on tax and contributions.
Fifty Shepherds Gathered at a Fairground in Miranda do Douro to Say the Wolf Compensation Arrives Two Years Late, or Not at All
More than fifty shepherds and livestock producers from Miranda do Douro, Vimioso and Mogadouro gathered at the fair at Naso on Sunday in black t-shirts reading "protected wolves, bankrupt producers". Jose Pinto, from Ifanes, said what the state pays does not cover the losses and that when it does pay it takes more than a year. Manuel Rodrigues said he lost two calves in two attacks, reported both to the ICNF and has been waiting nearly two years for anything. Alcino Antao, of Genisio, said an attack killed twelve of his sheep and injured ten, that he spent more than 500 euros on medicines, and that he received nothing for either the dead or the injured. Nuno Rodrigues, vice-president of the Miranda do Douro council and himself a producer, wants the Alcateia programme revised: fewer conditions on indemnities, more time and money for the fencing producers must install, and recognition of what feeding livestock guard dogs costs. The Iberian wolf has been protected in Portugal since 1988. The government increased Alcateia payouts in June under a 3.3 million euro envelope, dropped the sliding-scale reductions in August, and announced that indemnity values would double, backdated to January.
Paulo Raimundo Closes the Fiftieth Festa do Avante by Warning the Socialists That Passing the Budget Would Free Chega
The fiftieth Festa do Avante! closed on Sunday at the Quinta da Atalaia in Amora, and the PCP's general secretary Paulo Raimundo spent more than half an hour of it addressing the Socialists. If the PS lets the 2027 State Budget through, he said, it "confirms its complicity with right-wing policy and offers the PSD/CDS government, Chega and the IL more room to raise the attack", while releasing Chega from having to do the permitting itself. The PS would then own "the dismantling of the National Health Service, the attack on the public school, property speculation, the attack on wages, on pensions and on Social Security, the privatisations, rising prices". Chega's censure motion, debated and voted on Tuesday, went unmentioned; Raimundo had refused on Saturday to condition his party's occasion to another party's agenda. He called the government's policy "a policy of disaster, which deserves censure", named Chega, the PS and the IL as censurable for supporting it, demanded price regulation on food, energy and fuel, a gas bottle fixed at 20 euros and VAT at 6 percent on energy and telecoms, and warned of an "assault on Social Security". Next year's festival is booked for 3 to 5 September 2027.
