Flight Bookings to Portugal Jump 21 Per Cent as Travellers Swap the Middle East for the Algarve

Portugal has recorded a 21 per cent year-on-year surge in flight bookings and a 16 per cent rise in hotel searches as international travellers redirect summer plans away from the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean, according to industry data compiled in the first two weeks of April.

The shift is being driven by the ongoing Strait of Hormuz crisis and the March drone strike on a British air base in Cyprus, which together have redrawn the risk map for millions of holidaymakers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada.

Nearly 300,000 British Tourists Expected to Rebook

Industry analysts estimate that close to 300,000 British travellers who had planned trips to the UAE, Qatar, or other Gulf destinations are expected to rebook to safer alternatives in southern Europe. Portugal, Spain, and Italy are the primary beneficiaries, with the Algarve, the Canary Islands, and the Amalfi Coast absorbing the lion's share of diverted demand.

Spain's numbers are even more dramatic — a 32 per cent spike in flight bookings and a 28 per cent jump in hotel searches — but Portugal's gains are notable because they come on top of an already record-breaking start to 2026. Easter travel data showed US, Canadian, German, Swiss, and Spanish tourists all driving increased demand for Portuguese hotels and flights.

An Estimated EUR 4.2 Billion Boost

The diverted tourist flow is expected to contribute an additional EUR 4.2 billion to the Iberian Peninsula's combined tourism revenue for 2026. Spain's total sector revenue is projected at EUR 227 billion, with Portugal set to capture a meaningful share as airline seat availability on routes to the country increases by nearly six per cent year-on-year in April alone.

Hotel occupancy projections for the summer season point to gains of up to three percentage points, a significant margin in an industry where a single point of occupancy can determine profitability for smaller operators.

Portugal's Geographic Advantage

Portugal's appeal goes beyond price. The country sits at the westernmost edge of continental Europe, geographically isolated from the conflict zone and historically associated with political neutrality. For families and retirees who previously favoured Dubai or Doha for winter sun, the Algarve offers a similar climate with none of the security anxiety.

Turismo de Portugal has capitalised on the moment, launching a new round of funding — EUR 11 million across 12 projects — aimed at spreading visitor numbers more evenly across low-density regions. The programme targets inland municipalities that have traditionally received little tourism infrastructure investment.

The Hormuz Variable

"It will all depend on what happens in Hormuz, because all these forecasts could go out the window," warned Jorge Marichal, president of Spain's hotel confederation Cehat. If the strait reopens and tensions de-escalate, some redirected bookings may revert to original destinations.

For now, though, Portugal's tourism sector is enjoying a windfall that few predicted at the start of the year — and hotel operators along the Algarve coast are scrambling to hire seasonal staff to meet it.
