ECB Holds Rates Amid Middle East Uncertainty

The European Central Bank kept all three key interest rates unchanged on Thursday -- the deposit facility at 2%, the main refinancing rate at 2.15%, and the marginal lending facility at 2.4%. President Christine Lagarde warned that the Middle East war has "significantly" clouded the economic outlook. ECB staff projections now put eurozone growth at just 0.9% for 2026, down from earlier estimates, with inflation forecast at 2.6%.

Montenegro Admits Deficit Possible in 2026

Prime Minister Luis Montenegro acknowledged at the European Council in Brussels that Portugal may post a budget deficit this year due to the combined impact of the January storms and soaring energy costs. He rejected an "obsession with surpluses," insisting the country can absorb the fiscal shock without breaching EU rules.

Council of Ministers Approves Fuel and Energy Relief Package

The government approved a broad set of measures including a fiscal clawback on fuel tax revenue, release of 10% of strategic reserves, a 10-cent-per-litre professional diesel subsidy, increased support for solidarity gas bottles, and a new crisis mechanism allowing price caps when wholesale electricity exceeds 180 euros per megawatt-hour.

Food Basket Hits Record 254 Euros

Consumer watchdog Deco Proteste reported the standard 63-item grocery basket reached an all-time high of 254.32 euros, up 7.3% year-on-year. Sonae's Claudia Azevedo called for a return of zero-VAT food measures; Jeronimo Martins' Pedro Soares dos Santos said his group is absorbing fuel cost increases but will reassess at month's end.

PS Leader Travels to Venezuela to Meet Portuguese Community

Socialist Party leader Jose Luis Carneiro arrived in Caracas on Thursday for a visit lasting until Sunday, accompanied by parliamentary group leader Eurico Brilhante Dias. Sintra Restricts Historic Centre Traffic, Launches Spring Events
