The Braga Brief — Week of 19 June 2026: SC Braga Folds on 120% Ticket Hike, Vicens Opens Pré-Época on 22 June, São João Lights Up the Centro Histórico

Bom dia, Braga. The week of 13–19 June 2026 closed with the sócios of SC Braga forcing the Arsenalzinho into the fastest commercial U-turn in recent memory, Carlos Vicens counting down to the first whistle of pré-época on 22 June, and the centro histórico stringing up the bunting for an eight-day São João that opens tonight under an IPMA heat alert and maximum wildfire danger across the Minho.

SC Braga: Folds on the Annual-Seat Hike as the Sócios Revolt

The Braga story of the week is the one that nearly turned into a governance crisis at the Pedreira. On Tuesday, SC Braga had to publicly scrap a 2026/27 lugares anuais (annual seats) reform that members described as a tariff shock — increases reaching up to 120% in some categories, including the bancada lateral poente under-14 (west lateral youth) section. The club statement was uncharacteristically direct: "with this decision the increases foreseen across all sectors of the Estádio Municipal de Braga are without effect." Renewals were temporarily suspended and restart Monday 22 June, with refunds offered to any sócio who renewed in the two-day window before the reversal. The trigger was a supporter movement called O Escadote that began collecting signatures for an extraordinary general assembly to challenge what it called "colossal" hikes; the threat of a forced AG on the eve of pré-época was enough to flip the board. For a club still without a sporting director's transfer haul to announce, the timing was poisonous — and the climbdown is now part of Carlos Vicens's commercial inheritance before he has trained a single session at the Cidade Desportiva.

Vicens Opens Pré-Época on 22 June, Only Diogo Travassos Confirmed

The Spaniard who arrived from Pep Guardiola's Manchester City bench takes his first training session as head coach on Monday 22 June at the Cidade Desportiva. The transfer board, for now, has a single name on it: Diogo Travassos, a lateral arriving from Sporting CP where he spent last season on loan at Moreirense. The pré-época calendar published by the club is built around an English training camp at St George's Park from 4 to 10 July — the same FA centre Gareth Southgate's England used as a base — with closed-doors friendlies against São João de Ver (3 July), Buxton (7 July) and Stoke City (10 July) on either side of the trip. Vizela visit on 14 July before the public apresentação aos sócios against Celta de Vigo at the Pedreira on 18 July, 19:30 kick-off. Six days later, Vicens's competitive debut: the second preliminary round of the UEFA Conference League against Železničar Pančevo in Serbia on 23 July. Six weeks from the first training session to the first European tie is unforgiving — and the squad turnover has not yet started.

São João de Braga 2026: 17–24 June, with the Feriado on Wednesday

The Festas de São João de Braga opened officially on Tuesday 17 June and run through the feriado municipal on Wednesday 24 June. The câmara's eight-day programme is built on the traditional skeleton previewed in last month's Brief — the cavaquinho marathon at Largo de S. Francisco, the encontro de concertinas pulling players across the Minho, and the XXXV Encontro Internacional de Gigantones e Cabeçudos parading the giant figures and big-headed dancers through the centro histórico. The headline music nights at Avenida da Liberdade are anchored by Tony Carreira, Diogo Piçarra, Ágata and Katia Guerreiro, with Ana Lua Caiano and Bandua leaning into the contemporary wing. Autarca Ricardo Rio's framing — that São João sounds "like passion, ambition and Braga" — remains the festival's elevator pitch to the heritage-tourism market.

IPMA Stacks a Yellow Heat Alert on Top of Maximum Fire Danger

Festival week is also a meteorological warning. The IPMA placed the Braga district under yellow heat alert for elevated temperatures running into Saturday, and the agency's fire-risk map kept Braga inside the cohort of 17 continental districts with concelhos at maximum ("máximo") rural-fire danger as of Friday. The ANEPC's standing advice — no open flames, no agricultural burning, no fireworks outside permitted zones — collides directly with the cascata-and-balcony culture of São João. Câmara guidance is for revellers to keep the traditional martelinhos (plastic hammers) and skip anything pyrotechnic until the licensed midnight show on the 23rd. The national DECIR Charlie wildfire posture stepped up to its full 13,335 operationals and 78 aerial means on 15 June, including pre-positioned heavy bombers staged for the Minho-Douro arc.

Hospital de Braga: PPP Study Due by April, Tender Launch Still Targeted for 2026

On the health-system front, the Administração Central do Sistema de Saúde (ACSS) is working to a hard deadline: the study justifying the return of public-private partnership management at the Hospital de Braga — alongside Loures, Vila Franca de Xira, Amadora-Sintra and Garcia de Orta — must land by April 2026, with the international tender launch planned for the second half of the year. The scoping confirmed in October 2025 widens the contract beyond hospital management to cover the buildings of the respective Unidades Locais de Saúde primary-care network, where these are not assigned to municipalities. Braga was the first of the original PPP cohort to return to public management in September 2019 — the second cycle would test whether the conditions that produced the first reversion have been resolved.

UMinho: Special-Admissions Window Opens, with the Mudança de Curso Portal Live on 18 June

Across the Avenida the Universidade do Minho opened its Concursos Especiais and Mudança de Par Instituição/Curso admissions window on Thursday 18 June, running through 3 July — the route used by mature students, holders of international qualifications and undergraduates switching universities or programmes. National-concurso candidates have a separate calendar that opens on 20 July, so the UMinho window is the gateway most expat families with children in Portuguese secondary education are watching this fortnight. Reitor Pedro Arezes is also pushing the institution's new licenciaturas dois-em-um dual-degree model into the marketing for 2026/27, with the inaugural pair — Management plus Economics, and Physics plus Mathematics — joining the standard catalogue.

On the Radar Next Week

Watch for the Pedreira to fill with the first cohort of pré-época kit on Monday and for SC Braga to follow up the price climbdown with a transfer-window opening salvo before the camp leaves for England. The câmara is scheduling the São João pyrotechnic show on the night of the 23rd, with the feriado municipal taking the city offline on the 24th. And the UMinho admissions window closes 3 July — the next milestone before the national concurso opens.
