Metropolitano de Lisboa announced this week that the southern stretch of the Linha Verde — the segment running between Cais do Sodré and Martim Moniz — will be closed in both directions from Saturday, 2 May 2026 to Tuesday, 5 May 2026 for tunnel works tied to the construction of the Linha Circular. The closure spans four days, covering the bank-holiday Saturday after 1.º de Maio, the Sunday and Monday tourism peak, and the first working day of the week. Service is scheduled to resume on Wednesday, 6 May.

Which Stations Are Out

During the closure, trains on the Linha Verde will run only between Martim Moniz and Telheiras in both directions. The four stations south of Martim Moniz — Rossio, Baixa-Chiado, Cais do Sodré, plus the interchange at Baixa-Chiado for the Linha Azul — will be unreachable on the green line for the duration of the works. The Linha Azul (Reboleira–Santa Apolónia), Linha Amarela (Odivelas–Rato) and Linha Vermelha (São Sebastião–Aeroporto) remain in normal operation, but anyone interchanging at Baixa-Chiado for a green-line southbound trip needs to factor in the surface re-routing.

The Carris Plan to Plug the Gap

Carris has published a multi-line surface alternative coordinated with Metro de Lisboa:

  • Martim Moniz → Cais do Sodré: bus lines 208 (Rede da Madrugada night service) and 760 are being scaled up.
  • Praça da Figueira → Cais do Sodré: bus line 774 (also a night and weekend line) plus the iconic 15E and 25E electric trams, the latter providing a tourist-friendly heritage option.
  • Rossio → Cais do Sodré: bus 207 (Rede da Madrugada) and night-running lines 732 and 736.

Carris has not announced extra fleet rotations beyond the timetable, but the network is configured to absorb most weekend volume even without additional vehicles.

Why the Closure Matters Now

The Linha Circular is the project that links the Rato terminus of the Linha Amarela through to Cais do Sodré, completing a circular service in central Lisbon. Civil works at the southern end of the project sit precisely on top of the Linha Verde tunnel between the existing Rossio, Baixa-Chiado and Cais do Sodré stations, which is why the existing line has to be drained and shut for short blocks of work. Metro de Lisboa has rotated similar four-to-five-day closures into bank-holiday windows throughout 2025 and 2026 to minimise weekday commuter impact.

What This Means for Expats and Visitors

  • If you live in Telheiras, Carnide or the Alvalade-Roma corridor, your green-line trips terminate at Martim Moniz. Plan a 10–15 minute walk or a single-stop tram ride to reach Rossio or the Baixa.
  • Cruise-ship and Cais do Sodré ferry passengers: ferry connections to Cacilhas, Seixal and Trafaria continue to operate as normal — only the metro link is affected. The 15E tram from Praça da Figueira runs along the riverside to Cais do Sodré and is the most visitor-friendly substitute.
  • Weekend tourists heading to Time Out Market (right above Cais do Sodré station) should plan an extra 10–15 minutes for the bus or tram leg.
  • Navigator app users: Citymapper, Google Maps and the Carris Metropolitana app have all updated their feeds with the closure window. Real-time information is also available on the Metro de Lisboa website and station displays.
  • Service resumes Wednesday, 6 May at the standard 06:30 first-train time.
