PSI Closes at New Five-Year High

The PSI index gained 0.76 percent on Wednesday, closing at 9,143 points and marking another five-year high. The index is up more than 10 percent year-to-date, outpacing most European peers. The rally has been fuelled by sector rotation, strong dividend yields, and growing international fund inflows.

Mota-Engil Surges 4.1%, Leads PSI

Construction and engineering group Mota-Engil was Wednesday's top performer, jumping 4.12 percent to €5.15. BCP followed with a 2.78 percent gain to €0.90. Both stocks have been beneficiaries of renewed institutional interest in Portuguese equities.

PSI Targets 10,000 Points

Analysts at XTB Portugal say the benchmark could reach 10,000 points within four to six months if current momentum holds. The index has climbed 1,000 points in fewer than 100 sessions. The anticipated Fidelidade IPO could further deepen market liquidity and attract new institutional capital.

Caixa Geral Eyes Bigger Fidelidade Stake

State-owned bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos is considering increasing its 15 percent stake in insurer Fidelidade to as much as 30 percent ahead of a potential IPO. The bank sold the insurer to China's Fosun in 2014 for €1 billion but retained a minority position.

Golden Visa Capital Flowing Into Funds

With real estate removed as a qualifying investment since October 2023, Golden Visa capital — particularly from US applicants investing €500,000 each — is increasingly flowing into Portuguese investment funds. Banco Big estimates this channel will accelerate through 2026, providing a meaningful liquidity boost to the small Portuguese market.

European Markets Rally; Lagarde Exit Reports Shake Euro

European indices closed broadly higher on Wednesday. The IBEX 35 gained 1.35 percent, the FTSE MIB added 1.30 percent, and the CAC 40 rose 0.81 percent. The euro weakened after the Financial Times reported ECB President Christine Lagarde plans to leave before her term ends in October 2027. Markets are watching potential successors Pablo Hernández de Cos and Joachim Nagel.

EUR/USD Forecast: Analysts See $1.20-$1.24 by Year-End

Despite the Lagarde-driven dip, most major banks forecast the euro strengthening against the dollar through 2026, targeting $1.20-$1.24 by December. The outlook is driven by expected US Fed rate cuts and Germany's €1 trillion fiscal stimulus boosting the eurozone economy.

IMI Changes Target Vacant Properties

New IMI (property tax) rules for 2026 are targeting vacant and under-used properties with higher rates designed to discourage long-term vacancy and improve housing supply. Municipalities including Lagos have already confirmed their frameworks. Property owners — particularly those holding second homes or investment properties — should review their exposure to the surcharges.

Housing Prices Continue to Climb

Portuguese real estate prices continue their upward trajectory, with the gap between Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, and the rest of the country widening. First-time buyers face an increasingly detached market relative to local incomes. Lisbon's cost of living for a single person now stands at approximately €2,400 per month.

US Background Check Service Launches for Expats

Identity Abroad has partnered with afpop to offer US citizens in Portugal a streamlined FBI background check service, delivering results within four to five business days. The apostille process is offered at a discounted rate of $100 through partner organisations, addressing one of the most time-consuming steps in residency and citizenship applications.
