Seguro Takes the Oath, Promises Stability

Antonio Jose Seguro was sworn in as Portugal's 21st President of the Republic at a morning ceremony in the Assembly of the Republic. In his inaugural address, he pledged to end the cycle of snap elections and budget crises that has defined recent Portuguese politics, saying he would do "everything to halt the electoral frenzy." He decorated outgoing president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa with the Grande-Colar da Ordem da Liberdade before proceeding to the Belem Palace, where he hosted a lunch for visiting heads of state including Angola's Joao Lourenco.

Oil Breaks $100 as Hormuz Standoff Enters Second Week

Brent crude surged past $100 per barrel for the first time since 2022, peaking at $119.50 in early Asian trading before settling around $100 after reports of a possible G7 coordinated release of strategic petroleum reserves. The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed to commercial tanker traffic. Goldman Sachs has warned that without resolution, prices could reach $150 by month's end.

Record Fuel Price Hike Hits Portugal

Portuguese diesel prices rose by approximately 20 centimos per litre on Monday, the largest single-week increase on record. The government offset 3.55 centimos through an emergency ISP reduction, but the net increase remains historic. Petrol rose 7.5 centimos with no fiscal relief. Prime Minister Montenegro signalled further measures may follow.

European Markets Slide on Energy Fears

Stock markets across Europe opened sharply lower. The Stoxx Europe 600 fell 1.3 percent, erasing its year-to-date gains. Germany's DAX dropped 1.2 percent, France's CAC 40 lost 1.8 percent, and the FTSE 100 shed one percent. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 plunged five percent and South Korea's Kospi fell 6.6 percent. Wall Street also opened lower.

Portugal Rugby Reaches European Championship Final

The Lobos crushed Spain 26-7 at the Estadio do Restelo on Sunday to secure a place in the Rugby Europe Championship final. Rodrigo Marta scored twice in a dominant display. Portugal will face Georgia in the final, to be held next Sunday in Madrid.
