Portugal's electronic toll and mobility platform Via Verde will increase prices across several of its services from April 10, with some subscription plans rising by as much as 25 percent. The changes affect millions of drivers who rely on the system for motorway tolls, parking, fuel payments, and urban mobility.
The price update, first announced in early March, takes effect this Thursday and applies to monthly and annual subscription fees — not to the toll charges themselves, which are set by concession operators.
What's Changing
Via Verde Autoestrada (the core motorway toll service):
- Monthly fee rises from €1.03 to €1.04
- Annual fee rises from €12.25 to €12.39
Via Verde Mobilidade (the expanded service covering tolls, parking, fuel, and ferries):
- Monthly fee rises from €1.75 to €1.99 — a 13.7% increase
- Annual fee rises from €20.49 to €23.49 — a 14.6% increase
Via Verde Mobilidade Leve (the lighter mobility plan):
- Monthly fee rises from €2.09 to €2.49 — a 19.1% increase
How to Reduce the Impact
Via Verde is offering discounts to customers who switch to electronic statements (fatura eletrónica), eliminating paper billing:
- Autoestrada monthly drops to €0.54 (from €1.04)
- Mobilidade monthly drops to €1.49 (from €1.99)
- Mobilidade Leve monthly drops to €1.99 (from €2.49)
Customers can activate electronic billing through the Via Verde app or website. The discount is applied automatically from the following billing cycle.
What's Not Changing
Prices for physical accessories — such as adhesive identifier tags and protective pouches — remain unchanged. The toll charges themselves, set by motorway concession holders like Brisa, are also unaffected by this update, though they were already adjusted earlier in the year in line with inflation.
Context
Via Verde serves approximately 5.5 million customers and is used on virtually every Portuguese motorway. For many drivers, particularly commuters in the Lisbon and Porto metropolitan areas, the platform is effectively mandatory for daily travel.
Consumer groups have criticised the timing of the increases, coming on the heels of record fuel prices and a broader cost-of-living squeeze. The Portuguese consumer association DECO has urged customers to review their subscription plans and switch to the most cost-effective option for their usage pattern.
