Portugal's Road to the 2026 World Cup: Full Schedule, Group K Breakdown, and What to Expect

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup now just ten weeks away, Portugal's preparations are entering their final phase. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed on Thursday that Nigeria will be the Seleção's final warm-up opponent before the squad heads to North America.

Here is everything you need to know about Portugal's path to, through, and hopefully beyond the group stage.

Pre-Tournament Friendlies

Portugal's warm-up schedule is now complete. After beating the United States 2-0 in Atlanta on 31 March, the team will play two more friendlies in June before departing for the tournament.

  • Portugal vs Poland — Saturday, 7 June (venue to be confirmed, expected in Portugal)
  • Portugal vs Nigeria — Tuesday, 10 June (venue to be confirmed, expected in Portugal)

The choice of Nigeria as the final opponent is strategic. DR Congo, Portugal's first group-stage rival, are a central African nation whose style and physicality will share characteristics with the Super Eagles. The friendly gives Roberto Martínez a chance to fine-tune his tactical approach against a similar profile of opposition.

Nigeria will face Poland in Warsaw on 3 June before travelling to Portugal for the match on 10 June.

Group K: Opponents and Schedule

Portugal were drawn into Group K at the December 2025 draw, seeded in Pot 1. The group runs from 17 to 27 June and is hosted across venues in the United States.

The group is demanding but navigable. Colombia, ranked 13th in the world, are the most dangerous opponents and will likely contest the top spot with Portugal. Uzbekistan, making their first-ever World Cup appearance (ranked 50th), are an unknown quantity. DR Congo, who qualified through the intercontinental play-off by beating Jamaica on 31 March, return to the tournament for the first time since 1974.

How the New Format Works

The 2026 World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams, up from 32. The tournament is divided into twelve groups of four. The top two teams in each group advance to the round of 32, and the eight best third-placed teams also qualify for the knockout rounds.

This means Portugal could theoretically finish third in Group K and still progress, a safety net that did not exist in previous editions. However, for a team ranked sixth in the world and tipped as a dark horse for the title, anything less than topping the group would be considered a disappointment.

If Portugal win Group K, they will face one of the best third-placed teams from Groups D, E, I, J, or L in the round of 32. If they finish second, they meet the runner-up of Group L.

The Squad Question

The elephant in the room remains Cristiano Ronaldo. Now 41, the all-time international top scorer has shown no signs of stepping aside, and manager Roberto Martínez has consistently included him in squads. The 2-0 victory over the United States in Atlanta offered a glimpse of how the team might function, with Ronaldo starting but a younger generation, including Rafael Leão, Pedro Neto, and João Félix, increasingly influential.

The depth of Portugal's squad is arguably the strongest it has ever been. Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva provide world-class creativity in midfield, while Rúben Dias and António Silva anchor the defence. The goalkeeping position, with Diogo Costa as first choice, is settled.

Martínez is expected to announce a preliminary 26-man squad in late May, with the final list confirmed after the Nigeria friendly.

Portugal's World Cup History

Portugal have qualified for nine World Cups in total, with their best result being third place at England 1966, when Eusébio's Golden Boot-winning performance remains one of the tournament's defining moments. More recently, Portugal reached the semi-finals in Germany 2006 and the round of 16 in Qatar 2022, where they were eliminated by Morocco.

The 2026 edition represents what many consider a golden generation's last realistic shot at the trophy, with several key players likely to be past their peak by the 2030 tournament.
