Lisbon's annual Festas de Abril programme launches this Friday, April 11, with a packed calendar of free concerts, comedy, jazz, film, and cultural events running through the end of the month and culminating in the 25 de Abril Freedom Day commemorations.
Organised by EGEAC, the city's cultural events agency, the festival celebrates the return of spring, the anniversary of Portugal's 1974 Carnation Revolution, and Lisbon's living heritage through events staged across some of the capital's most iconic venues.
Opening Night: GNR Mounted Band at Terreiro do Paço
The festivities begin at 4pm on April 11 at Terreiro do Paço with a performance by the Charanga a Cavalo da Guarda Nacional Republicana — the GNR's mounted military band, one of only a handful of such formations in the world. The spectacle combines live music, horsemanship, and military tradition in an open-air setting overlooking the Tagus.
Highlights Across the City
The programme spans multiple venues and genres:
- April 15 — Gulbenkian: "Por Um Mundu Nôbu," a celebration of the Portuguese language featuring Calema, Carolina Deslandes, Dino D'Santiago, and the Orquestra Sem Fronteiras, directed by maestro Martim Sousa Tavares. The concert bridges Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, and São Tomé through music.
- April 17 — Beato Innovation District: Comedian Herman José revisits iconic characters and songs from his decades-long career in an intimate evening show. Entry is free.
- April 18 — Beato Innovation District: Vizinhos, the breakout band from Évora known for energetic live performances, play a free concert at 9:30pm.
- April 23–24 — Cinema São Jorge: Two nights of jazz programmed by the Hot Clube de Portugal, featuring vocal group LEIDA, the Ricardo Toscano Trio, saxophonist Maria João Leite's Trevo project, and pianist Mário Laginha.
Heritage and Family Programming
Beyond the headline acts, the Festas de Abril include guided visits to the Fábrica de Moagem — a restored flour mill within the former Military Supplies complex at Beato — on April 17 and 25, plus family-friendly events at the Castelo de São Jorge, Padrão dos Descobrimentos, Museu de Lisboa, Museu do Aljube, and the LU.CA children's theatre.
The festival also overlaps with two major Lisbon cultural events: the IndieLisboa international film festival (April 20 to May 1) and the Peixe em Lisboa seafood gastronomy festival, both of which contribute to making late April one of the city's most vibrant cultural periods.
All Festas de Abril events are free of charge. The full programme is available at egeac.pt.
