Easter Road Safety Operation Records Four Deaths in 24 Hours

Portugal's GNR recorded 236 road accidents on the first day of the annual "Operação Páscoa" traffic safety campaign, resulting in four fatalities, five serious injuries, and 68 minor injuries. Officers detected nearly 1,400 traffic violations, including drink-driving offences and excessive speed. The Easter operation runs through the long weekend as millions of Portuguese travel to family gatherings and holiday destinations.

Second US MQ-9 Reaper Drone Lands at Lajes Air Base

A US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper combat drone landed at Lajes Air Base in the Azores early Friday morning, marking the second consecutive night the facility has received the weapon system. The drone arrived at 02:08 local time, refuelled, and departed at 05:44. Developed by General Atomics, the Reaper can carry up to eight precision missiles and fly for 27 hours. The PS party has formally questioned the government about authorising these deployments, calling them "the first time this type of weapons system has been deployed to national territory."

Azores President Calls for Review of Lajes Agreement with US

José Manuel Bolieiro, president of the Azores regional government, said the agreement governing US use of Lajes Air Base should be reviewed, arguing that the Azores have repeatedly proven their geostrategic value to NATO. Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel has insisted Portugal is not involved in the Iran operation and that international law conditions on the use of the base are being met.

TAP Privatisation Down to Two Bidders After IAG Exit

The privatisation of TAP Air Portugal will now be contested by just two groups -- Air France-KLM and Lufthansa -- after IAG, owner of British Airways and Iberia, confirmed it would not bid. IAG said it could not justify a minority stake without a clear path to full ownership. Parpública has 30 days to evaluate the two non-binding proposals.
